Is Sport Taking So Much Money?
One thing I noticed was that in the stadium there was no distinction, all the fans who made it there sit in the crowd together regardless of their races, countries, accent, class, and so on.
This symbolizes peace and unity for me. On a normal, it is usually difficult to have that kind of gathering, most people won't turn but it's funny how football has been doing it for many decades.
I am not so much into sports, I don't have a favorite team and I don't have a favorite sport.
Although from time to time, I watch football or car racing basically for entertainment nevertheless, I know that sport is beyond entertainment, it is another way of uniting people but sometimes, it is as if what is spent on sport is almost too much.
Yesterday, someone posted on Facebook the amount of money that was spent in Nigeria for the competition that has been going on between different states and it surprised me.
So, we have this kind of money in the country and we are struggling with lack of opportunities, and with many graduates on the ground with no jobs?
People in rural communities are suffering from lack of basic amenities, government schools are lacking structures and materials for effective learning, sometimes it's even communities that volunteer to supply certain things in schools yet millions of naira are spent on sport.
Is there anything wrong with sport? Not at all, but everything is wrong with how money is directed to it. My concern is not that so much money is spent on organizing competitions, I know that amount of money is nothing to the government but why are they spending little on basic things and so much on sport?
If the government is also taking responsibility and ensuring that money flows into every sector; education, health, agriculture and so on, seriously, I wouldn't be pained.
Sadly, from the look of things all the money my country is spending on sport is just for a selfish interest, only those at the top get the praises and the benefit that comes with it but the masses are not benefiting anything from it.
Am I saying that they should stop funding sport in Nigeria and other countries that fund sport and neglect crucial things?
Not really, they don't necessarily need to stop, the government only need to do what is right by ensuring that the most important things are also taken into consideration, and if that would mean to reduce how much they spend on sport then I think it is fine.
If everything is going well with the people and the country, even if the whole Budget is channelled into sports, it won't be a problem.
But unfortunately, most countries aren't concerned about this. It is not as if they are ignorant of the fact that the money could be used for something else to help the people, they just want to make big names for themselves and take all the benefits that come with it.
Don't get me wrong though, sport is not useless, there are numerous advantages attached to it. It is also another way of making name and generating name for the country, it just that some countries are not doing things the way it ought to be.

Exactly, sporting is not the problem but the problem is how our government spend so much on unnecessary things not just sporting alone , there are other areas too.
you are right, but sometimes those things are not necessarily unnecessary, just that they corner most of the money to their accounts when it has to do with projects that they perceived there won't be much investigation, even if they are crucial.
When it comes to our government, sporty events is just another excuse for embezzlement. If proper auditing is done you would discover that the amount of money that is said to be spent on hosting sporting events is not the real amount, a large portion of it has been embezzled.
