Cons Of Breaking Promises

As long as we are living and still interacting with people, breaking promises is inevitable.

Sometimes, it is not as if we wanted to break them but circumstances and other things may lead to that.

One thing I learned the hard way in life is that we should never promise something no matter how confident we are about fulfilling them, even if we are tempted to.

I am so committed to using, “Okay, let's see how it goes,” than saying I promise because I know that life is unpredictable.
Sometimes it's as if life is just waiting for you to say the phrase and boom, circumstances will just come and spoil everything.

To the question, have you ever broken a promise? My answer is yes, I have done that so many times before and It may happen again if I don't stop promising.

I have this friend who asked me to follow her to the market some time ago. I was free that fateful Tuesday so I decided to go with her, after getting a few things. We went to a shop where female bags were sold.

We saw this beautiful white bag and she asked for the price, the man told her Eighteen Thousand Naira, then she turned to me and asked me to buy the bag for her, LOL.

“A chill went down my spine, like buy for you, how?” I asked myself quietly inside.

She didn't even tell me she wanted me to get her a bag before that day so that I could at least budget for it.

I won't lie, the lady was very beautiful and she knows how to use words, gosh! Instead of saying “no,” I just smiled and said, “I will get it for you the following week, I promise.”

We collected the vendor's phone number and we left. Seriously, I had it in mind to get the bag for her but when I got home, I reasoned the whole thing and it didn't make sense to me. So, I waved the matter off my mind, next week passed and I didn't get the bag for her, to date.

Funny enough she never asked me for it but she stopped believing me anytime I promised to do something.

Was my reason justifiable? The answer is no because I could have said I don't have money or I won't get it and it would have passed. I didn't have to make any promises.

One time someone promised me and failed was when I was in my final year in secondary school. My uncle from my maternal side promised to buy me a smartphone as soon as I was done with secondary school.

I was so happy about it, I thought that I was going to have my first brand new smartphone after WAEC (West African Examination Council) but after WAEC, I didn't see any phone.

I asked him about his promise and he said he had other projects to attend to, I should hold on. I kept waiting, till I got admission into college and eventually sourced for money elsewhere to get a fairly used smartphone. To date that promise has not been fulfilled.

Ideally, there is no reason enough to break any promise. If you know you can't keep them, don't make them. And why make promises in the first place when you know that life is not predictable?

Some people think that saying the phrase “I promise,” means commitment but most times it's just a cliche. You can keep saying it and keep breaking it. And one bad thing with continually breaking promises is that it breaks trust and reduces one's integrity.

To best way to avoid breaking promises is to avoid making one, simply give your words and be responsible.

My brother, like you said sometimes it’s not that we don’t want to fulfill the promises but we just couldn’t due to one thing or the other and that’s why we should never promise anything because once you said I promise you are in debt automatically
