Homework is a way of extending learning beyond the classroom
While growing up as a kid, I used to hate homework because it stopped me from having fun when I came back from school.

I had a female teacher in primary school and she was very wicked, she doesn't waste time in using the cane on us if we didn't do well in what she taught us and even though most of us were able to escape her cane, there were two pupils in my class I always pity because there is no day they don't get flogged, it is either they got zero in their class work or they were not able to read the comprehension passage during the english class.
My worst nightmare was not being able to do my homework, and it is the same for others who left their homework undone because she doesn't spare us, she will ask for it immediately after assembly, and failure to produce it means early morning lashes...
It was my brother who always helped me with most of the homework because it is not the same thing we were taught in class that will be given to us as homework, the teacher will give us 2 + 2 = 4 in class but give us ( 2 x 4) / (2)²... Like, WTF! How can you use the simple one as an example in class and give us the difficult one as homework? How do you expect us to do it? But it is what it is, and failure to do is trouble, so I often disturb my brother a lot. Sometimes I will wake him up around 6 a.m., crying that he is yet to do my homework for me, remembering those days now puts a smile on my face. lol

Even though I hate homework as a student, I do wish for it to be cancelled or stopped as a parent because it is another way to help the kids to know more about what they were taught in the classroom, the teacher will not explain everything just like the example I gave on how the simple questions are being solved in class while the difficult ones are given as homework, this gives the kids to learn from both their teachers and parents or siblings, it is never the duty of a teacher alone to groom the kid.
Another reason why home work is important is, most kids only pick up their book when they are at home because of home work, they know the consequence of leaving it undone, so rather than spend their evening playing, they use it in making sure their home work get done, so this takes most of their time and help them to be studious. Without homework, most children will just dump their school bag without checking it until the next day at school.
Homework is a necessity that should not be stopped, stopping it will only make pupils and students unserious with their studies, we already have a population that does not care about studies cos it just feels like they are being forced to do it... Cancelling homework will make things worse.

I am also in favour of giving homework but not like the examples you mentioned. Not every child has a supportive sibling or parent at home who may teach them. This way, the child is left in confusion.
if there is no supportive parent or sibling, then he can ask the neighbour for help or the parent can employ a tutor for him...
Hmmm. What if the parents do not have enough money to afford a tutor? And the neighbours are not supportive either?
Are you saying that the making of a stairs house should be terminated because someone can't climb stairs? It is that person who needs to improvise and find a way to make things work for him...
No sibling, neighbour not supportive, no money to hire a tutor, this is a problem the parent should know how to counter, how they do it is not the school's or others' concern....
No, I am not saying that stairs should be terminated, but I am saying the one who is responsible and is being primarily paid for teaching should teach so well that there should no longer be a need of any other assistance.
Our parents pay high fees to school to make us understand our lessons. It is the ultimate duty of the teachers at school to teach everything properly. I see it as an irresponsibility and incompetency from teacher's side to give a harder task from home. Whatever they give as homework must be well explained by them in the school.

.Now I get your point and know what you are against, and I agree with you on that... It was kind of annoying during those days for me...
Yeah, I am not against homework but the teachers' habit of giving a work that they themselves failed to explain at school
I think homeworks are the best ways to deepen a child's understanding on what they've learnt in school. But I'd admit that I wasn't the diligent student that does his homework at home. Sometimes, I do it last minute, in the morning when I arrive at the school before the first class :)
I did this in jss class too, I would copy from my friends in school early in the morning before assembly... Memories🙂

You just made me remember uncle Ajayi
