Sustainable and Proven Solutions For Population Growth

When it comes to population two things are involved. It's either a productive workforce such that population growth becomes an asset to the economy or a controlled birthrate such that population growth does not become overwhelming for the available resources.
Each government of the developed nation chooses either of the two to work with depending on their economic agenda. Unfortunately, when it comes to underdeveloped economies it becomes a problem of corruption and sabotage. Thus, it's a question of whether population growth is the problem or the mismanagement of resources and embezzlement of funds.
Another question becomes, if the funds from available resources are being utilized appropriately and spread evenly amongst regions, would population growth still be an issue? Certainly, with wealth creation comes productivity, and where productivity is present, there is human capital such that numbers become substantial, and quantity marries quality.
So it's not about placing an embargo on the number of children because this policy has a lot of loopholes, especially in Nigeria. For instance, will the policy be per couple or gender? How about regions like Northern Nigeria where polygamy is heavily practised and a man is entitled to four wives? There was a time when the enforcement of the Four Children per Household policy was quite rigid in Nigeria, but despite the effort put in, it did not see the light of day, especially due to the questions I have raised.
Moving on, we saw how the Chinese government, over the years, aggressively controlled their population growth rate, starting with the one-child policy. Over time, in 2021, they understood the role of population growth in wealth creation, and we saw them take a U-turn in relaxing the population control policy. I have even read that they are currently encouraging their citizens to have more children. It's no longer news that China is the new industrial nation of the world, and as such, its motive is greatly understood.
So for a country like Nigeria that already has a population increase, the government should be looking into investing heavily in industrialization and also ways to utilise its population growth productively. We need equal distribution of the nation's wealth.
Currently, a Four billion Naira monthly project is being awarded to an Ex militant leader to curb oil theft through pipeline vandalization in the Niger Delta region. To carry out this project, he created a company where he employs able-bodied youth as security to these pipelines and companies attached. Each of these youths receives Two hundred and fifty thousand Naira monthly.
To a non-economist, this is a good development engaging the population, but as an economist, my question is, is it a productive venture? Because certainly, all that four billion won't go into the project. So, for starters, we already have mismanagement of funds, which further aggravates the biting issues of overpopulation and available resources.
For a more suitable and effective approach to dealing with population growth, third-world countries should adopt the Chinese government policies in this regard. In the Nigerian economy, an investment in the power and transportation sector will go a long way in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).
In the long run, the more FDI established in the country, the more positively productive the youth becomes and, as such, the more developed the nation will be.
That is where the problem lies in most underdeveloped countries. Corruption, embezzlement, sabotage and lack of conscience has held us down in the sustainable economy for the masses.
The government and those called the leaders do not see the need for the resources to be utilized, which eventually will help productivities reaching and needing human labor that will help the entire population.
They don't want to help. Because if they do, nobody will worship them or be available to do their dirty jobs
Exactly sis. But God is always in control. Enjoy your evening 🥰
Damn! I'm able bodied oh, how can I apply please 🥺
Yeah, you've driven your point home well, one of the greatest challenges we have in this our country is that it's very lawless, the lawmakers will even be the first to disobey the rules they've made
Our population is neither a productive workforce nor aspiring workforce, people are just giving birth
Lol are you from Delta State?
Oh! It's only for people from Delta
Yeah it's a Delta state project from FG
The kicker is, governments already know how to stabilize population growth if they really want to: accessible healthcare, increase education for women, have birth control be accessible. It's been shown many times that as women stay in school longer, they marry later, and have fewer children; where birth control is accessible families can be planned, so a couple can say, plan to establish themselves in their work/buy a home/pursue higher education/whatever their goals are, and THEN have kids; and accessible healthcare which brings up survival of both mothers and children, means that families can plan for fewer children because they expect them to survive. All of this works so well, that developed countries are now concerned that birth rates are below replacement levels. In the US that was only mitigated with high immigration, but now the government is attacking immigrants (which is a whole different rant about the path this country is taking... ). >:( In Japan, they have really low immigration, and it's a huge concern for them.
One of the reasons why Northern Nigeria has the highest poverty rate is because they are the least literate, highly polygamous and operate a one partner earning system such that all the women do is to give birth. Not to mention child marriage is still very much a thing there. Like you rightly said, the government knows what to do but would not do because every negative trait means more avenues to push their selfish agenda.
As for clamping down on immigrants, that's a rant I tried so hard to avoid on this blog post. To support your say, the end will always justify the means.
This is exactly my concern, how exactly will the policy of using incentives to promote birth control be implemented? Just like you said, the focus shouldn't be about finding ways to reduce the rate of giving birth but creating opportunity that would create a means for Nigeria to use our over population issue to our advantage. We are at the point of initiating an industrial revolution, just like every other developed countries has done.
And we have all it takes for that industrial revolution to be a success. The only thing we lack is the will to pioneer itm
You have a good point, I never thought about the government utilizing this crazy population which would be a great one but we all know how it ends, Nigeria government only cares about things that benefit them and that's all.
Giving incentives would make any difference because the incentive won't even get to its destination in one piece.
Omo... It's a sad situation really.
Population growth?
You need just 10 Igbo men and like 40 women 😂
I thought Igbo men are not polygamous? 🤔
Thank you 😊
