Upgrade From Chains to Pains
Seeing movies made around history of slavery that happened in past centuries, seeing how people lived, worked hard, suffered and more, would always get me thanking God in a corner of my heart that I was not born then.
People were taken as slaves either through war or colonization and no slavery movie would actually make you smile or happy not until the freedom scene is shown and people are set free from being slaves.
Just like my people would say:
Though it may be faraway but slave has a father.
Thankfully, act of slavery was stopped and people are set free under the law and no one is dared to come out to the public saying he or she is into slave trade but the sincere question iremains that, is it really true that slave trade is put to an end and to a stop? Is it true that Slavery is no longer happening or we are just merely overlooking the fact?
Nowadays, it's no longer based on chains on legs or hands in the process of trading people for money. It's no longer about having a uniform for slaves and taking them here and there to serve. Everything is been modernized now in a way that someone doesn't even get to suspect they are walking in the path of becoming a slave.
Human trafficking keep increasing day by day, taking people under the disguise of getting jobs for people abroad but at the end of the day, ladies are been taken away for prostitution while guys are taken away to do some dirty jobs.
Worst part is that all necessary documents of theirs to even run back home when they realize the trap they had fallen into would have been collected from them.
They are seen as beautiful, handsome and independent on the outside but in their closets, they are on the A-list of being a slave.
Some ladies are taken out of their own will to be slept with unwillingly, getting pregnant like it's an annual employment and giving birth to babies that would serve as business of selling to those in need of babies either for ritual purposes or to call their own after being unable to give birth to theirs. Most of the victims now even see it as their jobs since they have nowhere to run to.
Funny enough most of the locations where these acts occurs are known publicly but nothing is been done to apprehend the offenders or stop this act.
At the end of the day, most opportunities are lost when it comes to securing jobs from outside the country all because people are scared not to fall victims of this wickedness.
This made me remember someone who came to my DM sometime ago, telling me about a job in a certain place out of Nigeria which had so many benefits, and that all my traveling expenses would be covered of which I can start to refund in percentage which we decide to agree on when I get there and start earning. As nice as the offer is, mentioning the location made me block her offer in my reasoning because it was a no go area for me and even if it was even a different location, I will still think about it twice before proceeding since it's not a direct offer from the employer.
Aside the slavery from one nation to another, it will sound funny if I say that slavery still occurs within our dear country.
Employers paying below the standard minimum wages for employees is an act of slavery. You know what you want as an employer and got it but because you know that unemployment rate out there is way too high and knows that the applicant do not have option, you decided to underpay him/her with a whole lot of job roles and description. ITS AN ACT OF SLAVERY
Probably if the government and private sectors would do something about reducing unemployment in the country, then slavery of any form would reduce to the minimum level both within the country and outside the country. There would be a reduction in how people seek for a greener pasture if our own country tends to provide a favourable economy to the citizens.

Human trafficking is the first thing that came to my mind when I see this prompt, that wickedness have to stop
I really hope so. I really do and I feel like if severe punishment is not given to any offender being caught then others won't start learning
I truly agree with you, especially in case of human trafficking, in fact maybe people do it without realising it's slavery in disguise.
I mean take for instance people who employ young boys or girls as maid, they don't even know how those children come to be and you'll see some of them treats those children inhumanly.
As in! Imagine o... Like very inhumane treatment
What about those that are being used in shops or stores? You would mostly find them in all these clothes sellers stores but they would never agree that it's a slavery in disguise

Let’s even go into the dangerous slavery, you see what some companies are doing to Nysc corpers is nothing but day light slavery and yes, some companies use their workers to the point that the workers will break down and the bad part is that, they’ll be replaced immediately while the one who break down won’t even get any health benefits to take care of themselves
It’s so sad that cooperate slavery is out there but no one to talk against it
I love that term "corporate slavery"
Replacement without looking back o my brother. You're even lying if you mentioned that you're not feeling fine let alone receiving health benefits
Exactly this people are not even ready to check if someone is physically fit to work. All they want is get the work done.
And what work can one do when one is not okay healthwise
😅😅 best they do is reply like a tool
😂... It is the "tool" for me
I found it very interesting how you showed that slavery didn't truly end, it just changed its form. I agree that human trafficking and even certain exploitative labor relations are modern versions of this. I also liked the personal example about the "job offer"; it made the text more realistic.

I know someone who got it hard too, in the name of getting better life ,she was sold into slavery all in the name of getting money.
It's just so sad seeing people fall into this kind of situation. We can't blame anyone who wants to get a good life for themselves now
Its really sad indeed
Slavery only changes form all the time. You have itemized many causes of modern slavery. God must help us.
