Oligarchy in the name of Democracy

Democracy is said to be the government of the people, by the people and for the people. Hmmm! Does it really work like that? Or do we just have it written down and never practiced even for a day. I believe we can tell better depending on our countries.

Nigeria is one of those countries that it is written that we practice democracy. But I don't really know what happened. Is it from the first people that started this form of government, or is it from the people who are in power now. Sincerely speaking I only read of democracy in government classes back in secondary school and even in our higher institutions. We read alot about what we know nothing about. I have never seen it practice. I have never experienced it in Nigeria since I know how to spell my name. Maybe something went wrong somewhere along the line because what we have today is not democracy. I can say this anywhere without any fear of contradiction. It is time to speak the truth. The truth they say is bitter, but it is better that we swallow it as we do our pills and receive our healing, than pretend we are not sick and die silently.

For me I don't see us practicing democracy in Nigeria. Though it is written down, but we are in the real sense practicing - OLIGARCHY. The people in power only swap the names so that their subjects will feel as if they are not been oppressed. But this is the better truth.

According to oxford dictionary, oligarchy is -

A government run by only a few, often the wealthy. Or we can also say that oligarchy is the system of government where power or authority is only in the ✋ hands of a small group of elite. These are the wealthy, influencial and also well connected in the society.

In this type of government, the ordinary people don't have a say. If you are not rich, influencial and know who knows who, you can't talk and people will listen. Infact even when you talk is becomes a tabbo. Some that insist on talking have lost their lives at the process. This is all that I see in Nigerian government.

HAS IT BEEN OF MUCH HELP TO THE WELLBEING OF MY PEOPLE?

Not at all. People are dying everyday because of this type of government that is practiced in Nigeria. It is not favouring the masses and only a few people have the courage to come out and challenge what is going on because they don't want to lose their lives. It is called democracy, but in actual sense it is oligarchy. It only favour the elite. If you are not among those who are rich, influencial and well connected, then you have no say in the government of the day. When you try to talk to the rulling people about the suffering of the masses they come for your life. So the best thing to do is to keep quiet. That is why I call it oligarchy government.

WHAT OTHER FORM OF GOVERNMENT DO YOU FEEL WOULD BE BETTER FOE THE PROSPERITY OF YOUR NATION?

Democracy. Yes. I want this type of government to be practiced in truth.

1. The people needs to vote in who they want to represent them at any level of government, and not someone that don't have their interest at heart to be imposed on them.

2. The people also needs to have a say in the government of the day because the person there is there for them and not his own selfish ambition.

3. The people desires to be taken proper care of by the person that is representing them at the top. Social amenities: good road, good hospitals, good schools and qualified teachers.

4. The people have the right to say no to anyone representing them when he is not saying their minds. And where need be, he can be removed from power if the people wants it so
   If we can achieve all of these, then we have democracy in our countries. Let it not just be written down, but practiced as well.
