Liberty Flow

On the city below you can see a river flowing through the city called "River", or more precise, in Croatian: The name of the river is Rječina, which means big river, & the name of the city is Rijeka, which means river. Sounds funny, doesn't it? But actually, isn't not really funny, it's more symbolical & magical - the city flows like a river. This city has a really strange historical background, known since the Illyrian times. It was the 1st fascist state ever officially proclaimed in the history of the mankind, before Italy! This river was once even a border between the 1st Yugoslavia & Italy. For long time it also was under the Hungarian rule & served as their main port. Sometimes the Austrian & the Venetian rule exchanged too. After 2nd world it was liberated from the fascists by the Yugoslavian partisans & the whole city was added to the 2nd Yugoslavia. Even the architecture on this photo is showing the various periods of history of the city.

Today, as well as for the last 50 years, Rijeka kept the status of the most cosmopolitan city in Croatia, along with the nearby region Istria. Unfortunately, during the Yugoslavian civil war, it was also robbed through the so-called privatization of public goods (factories, shipyards, companies, land...) by the domestic & foreign criminals in nice suits acting the good guys, like everywhere in the world. The quality of life here is not even near that one before the war in Yugoslavia. But! We are here to make it better for all of us!
