An Espresso in a Portuguese Atmosphere in Havana [eng/esp]
Hello, fellow coffee lovers!
Today I want to tell you about my experience at a café that is one of my favorites when I'm walking through Old Havana. It's the Café Colonata Egipciana, located on Mercaderes Street, one of the busiest streets in the city's historic center.
From the moment I visited it for the first time, I fell in love with the place for its Portuguese and bohemian atmosphere. I was passing by and couldn't help myself; I needed a coffee. I crossed its threshold and was enveloped in its cozy atmosphere, as if a little piece of Lisbon had crept into Havana.
I was struck by the lack of people, as this place is very popular. I chose a small table near the interior courtyard, where there is a mural depicting a typical Lisbon tram, and ordered an espresso.
I was greatly surprised when the waiter told me there was coffee, but no sugar. I told him I'd drink it straight. I often prefer to appreciate the true essence of this beverage, to taste its natural bitterness, the subtle notes that differ from one coffee to another, only discernible if drunk neat. Without sugar, the coffee reveals itself in all its complexity and authentic character.
While I waited for my coffee, my gaze and my camera roamed the place. The tiled walls tell its story. This place was once frequented by the Portuguese writer Eca de Queiroz, who was Portugal's ambassador to Havana in the 19th century.
Its small, dark wood tables and simple chairs create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It's not luxurious, but authentic. It's the kind of place where it's nice to sit alone with a book or chat with friends.
My coffee arrived in a simple white cup, giving off an intense and delicious aroma. At first sip, I sensed it was strong, just the way I like it. It had a robust body and a smooth finish that lingered on the palate long after I finished the cup.
These are the little luxuries I appreciate most: excellent coffee in a cozy setting, a moment of relaxation and rest.
If you're in Havana and your heart is craving a bohemian-style break and an espresso that leaves a lasting impression, be sure to visit Café Colonata Egipciana. It's a hidden gem in broad daylight, waiting for you to visit and indulge you, even if sometimes they don't have sugar, haha.
See you soon!

What a beautiful setting this is. I like how they incorporated nature and natural lighting:)
I love it! This building is part of the Spanish colonial architecture that takes advantage of sunlight by incorporating interior patios; the sun is very strong here. Thank you! Have a coffeelicious day too! 😅
