Conversations over coffee [at Volé Café]🤔☕

¡Hola, amigos!

Is it hard to make friends? That was the topic of conversation during our get-together at Volé, a café we visit from time to time. We almost always order a latte with a chocolate or lemon cake, but this time we went all out for dessert and ordered a brownie with ice cream, which turned out to be more expensive than we’d imagined.

One of the reasons we like this place is because it’s in a central part of the city, and whenever we go, it’s practically empty, so it feels quite intimate. The space is small and has a minimalist aesthetic that creates a cozy atmosphere with warm lighting, plants, and neutral tones. They have a menu with both sweet and savory options, perfect for breakfast, lunch, or simply sharing a dessert, although the prices are a bit higher than at other places.

The café con leche is really good—it has a silky texture and just the right amount of foam, with the perfect balance between the two ingredients. They serve the sugar on the side so you can choose how much to add. However, even without sugar, it’s still delicious; it’s not bitter at all. The brownie with ice cream was also good, but since I’m not a big fan of sweets, I couldn’t finish it. In the end, I ate the ice cream and took the other half of the brownie home, though my husband polished it off in a flash.

Now, to answer the original question: no, it’s not easy to make friends, at least in my experience. If it was hard to have a social life when I was a teenager, it’s twice as hard now, because almost everyone has had their friends since they were young and is happy with them. But fortunately, this doesn’t get in the way of my coffee outings, which I love so much, because when my sisters can’t join me, my husband is always up for it. I’d like to start a series where I visit new coffee shops, but on my own. It’s something I’m still a little shy about, but I think it would be interesting. What do you think?

¡Nos vemos pronto!

See you soon!

I am deeply grateful for your perspective; there is a serene wisdom in accepting that, whilst human connection is an essential social value, the ability to enjoy one’s own company is the foundation of all freedom. Stoicism teaches us that we cannot control others’ willingness to form friendships, but we can control our own willingness to explore the world with curiosity and courage. Visiting those places on your own is not an act of isolation, but an exercise in autonomy that uplifts the spirit. Ultimately, those who learn to be their own best company become the most valuable friends to others. May every coffee be, above all, an honest encounter with yourself.
