It's The Monsoon Season In My Town!
Each country or region has peculiar climate conditions. While in some some parts of the world like Canada are in summer, we are still in the rainy season here in Nigeria. It is of noteworthy that Nigeria has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons - the dry (harmattan and heat) and the rainy season. Here in my town, Aba which is in the South Eastern region, the dry season is usually from December to March while the rainy season is from April to September, with a break in August.
However, there's been considerable changes with these seasons for some years now. South East is the coldest region in Nigeria, having an average daily maximum temperature of only 31 °C so it wouldn't be surprising seeing rain extending to November, sometimes December, while the dry season starts January just like it has happened in the past two years now.
This year, 2024, had us experiencing first rain in February 1st, and it was a heavy one that got some roads and drains flooded. Everyone thought it was going to usher in the bigger phase of the harmattan since we didn't experience it much in December - January, but alas, it brought torrents of heat waves with it. It was so much that it could cook egg, lol. Infact, the unusual heat got everyone worried, some questioning if the ozone layer has given up completely. Many people were affected as there were records of people with terrible rashes all over their bodies. Children and babies were not left out, likewise myself though it was on my hands.
It was a frustrating period as no where was safe from the heat, even the gardens. The cool breeze we bin dey manage turned to hot breeze that it was even sickening taking in air. Chai, we suffer am that time, I tell you. Sleeping at night was a nightmare as the mosquitos decided to be on rampage defying every repellent. Sleeping under the net was even worse but I had no choice but to protect myself. I usually wake up twice in the middle of the night to pour cold water, which isn't even cold, on my body. If only there was constant power supply, it would have been manageable, but alas, the distribution company also traveled with the harmattan, lol.
Finally, the rains started coming and everyone heaved a sigh of relief. But it seems like the rain doesn't want to give a break, hehehe. Here in my town, Aba, it's been rain almost every day. Even as I write now, the clouds are building up and might release itself to rain. The third week of last month, July, had us experiencing the usual seven days rain, infact it was nation wide and I tell you it wasn't funny at all. It rained cats and dogs for that seven days.
Talking about favorite weather, I'd prefer an in between weather with mild rain and harmattan but no heat. The heat we experienced this year should last us for a decade to come, lol. I'm usually prone to cold so I neither like the rainy nor the dry (harmattan) weather as both of them come with cold. Moreover I don't like being touched by the rain, although I'm not salt. 🤣
Although the rainy season is good but sometimes it's aftermath is usually not pleasing. Heavy rainfall usually result to flood in some parts of the country just like it happened during the seven days rain. Roads, houses, shops and business premises were flooded. Some lost properties and other valuables.
Heavy wind was not left out as it destroyed crops, trees, including roofs of some buildings in some areas. It was a terrible occurrence.
Not only that, there were heavy thunderstorm and lightning which also destroyed lighting bulbs and electronic gadgets. I felt the effect of the lightning on one of the days it struck. I was leaning on the refrigerator pressing my phone. Before you can say, Jack!, I felt a heavy shock just like electric shock and next thing was a spark on the electric sockets. I didn't even know when I dropped my phone and flew away from the refrigerator, hehehe. The next place I found myself was on the bed, shouting "Jesus, Jesus", lol. After calming down, I switched off the sockets, unplugged everything till the next day. It was frightful and I wish not to experience it again, abeg o. 😅
The harmattan is even worse as the weather is not only cold but dry and dusty causing dryness of skin with chapped lips, influenza and drought. It usually has serious effect on some people, you'll see their skins looking whitish with breakages, almost like scales. Ah, I don't give it a chance o, I'm always well covered up, carry my drinking water to stay hydrated, and lip balm too. I don't want stories, abeg.
So with me having no favorite weather or even a second best, I just have to accept any that comes and equally protect myself from their adverse effects.
