The potential power of dolphins and orcas!
Quite a few times I've been hearing Hivers mention that Hive is in control of just a few Whales who control everything and that would make Hive not as decentralized as it claims to be.
Of course I also see that we have some powerful Whales that can influence decisions for DHF projects just by their vote or support certain projects they like with an auto upvote. And that is their right to do so. They have gathered their stake and can do what they want.
But what kept bothering me was, the statement that whales are in control of Hive.
So, I did some background checks and calculations with the of use of ChatGPT.
First I checked the number of Whales on Hive on https://hivebuzz.me/ranking . I did this by counting the HP. This isn't the effective HP by the way. A lot of these accounts have delegated some of their stake, sometimes even all of it.
I've counted 39 whales which have a total of 92,392,792 HP. That's quite a lot huh?
Then I looked at the orcas on the list. These are number 40-323 on the list; 182 in total.
As I didn't want to manually calculate the amount of Hive, I took the amount of the first and last one and asked ChatGPT to give an estimate of what the total amount would be (taking into account that the value for each orca needs to be between 60 and 600k).
It estimated a total value of ~75.000.000
I did the same trick for the 1817 dolphins in the list. They have at least 6 and at most 60k, ChatGPT estimated a total value of ~60.000.000
This means all orcas and dolphins would have 135.000.000 Hive in total which is far more than the 92,392,792 of the Whales!
So actually the orcas and dolphins have more power than the Whales..... if they would work together...
Dolphins and orca's unite!
I remember that I read @alex-rourke a couple of months ago with the title: Fellow orca's unite!
Alex asked his fellow orca's to take their responsibility for the Hive blockchain and vote for how the DHF funds are spend, which witness nodes are in the top 20 and good/bad quality content (up/down).
I totally agree with his blog. But what if even make the impact even bigger by adding the dolphins too.
I think we could really make some impact as a group if we would organize ourselves and work together. Not only to get DHF proposals funded, but we could also collectively upvote posts of certain projects so they would get a larger payout.
What do you think?
I was thinking we could create a place where we discuss projects, agree on what deserves support, and then use our votes in a coordinated way. This could mean voting on DHF proposals or upvoting blogs from projects or initiatives.
It's not necessary that we all agree unanimously, but it would be a way to reach a large group of middle sized stakeholders.
We could for instance create a Discord channel for the discussions and/or a dedicated community where people could pith their projects. Like a bit of a shark tank, but then with orcas and dolphins 😂
Fellow dolphins and orcas; I'm really curious how you think about this subject. Please join the conversation in the comments. Drop your thoughts, share your ideas, and let’s see if we can turn our combined power into real impact on Hive.
Oh, also let me know if you don't think it's a good idea 😊
Reblogging this post would certainly help getting more attention of fellow dolphins and orcas.
Or tag them in the comment section.

Orcas and Dolphins teaming up? 💪 That could shake things up! Let's see how it plays out. 🐳
Yes! absolutely! everybody is welcome to participate. The thing is this: in any community, when individual participants need to vote on things, there will be voter apathy. If we can create a base of 300-500 100K (average) HP orcas, these accounts can drive Hive culture. Dolphins will aspire to become active orcas and minnow will aspire to become active dolphins. In this situation, decisions will be made by the diverse majority and not by a handfull of whales.
Thanks for reacting 😊
I wonder if your initiative resulted in something concrete?
It's hard to measure, but it's a medium to long-term idea. I'll support community members that vote (on witnesses, proposals and content) engage, build and promote outside of HIVE. I'm sure there are others who see the value in creating a small group of Hive citizens that might inspire other Hive citizens to do the same. It's worth a shot.
I think I'm going to try the shot to create a group of stakeholder that can support projects on Hive.
Where will you create this group?
I think I'll make a community and a discord channel.
Hivers tend to be quite independent, but people are free to get organised. I tend to just do my own thing and I have been asked to vote on proposals. Not that I can really swing them alone. I managed to use up my daily votes most days supporting people I follow and it is mostly manual voting. I may give smaller votes to posts that already have good rewards. It's a fact of life here that certain people can always get big votes.
I also do my own thing and upvote some projects I come across. But when you run a project it is hard to get the attention of larger stakeholders. So if we could create a place where people could pitch their projects to a group of larger stakeholders, some projects (and I don't mean only DHF projects) could get more funds and options to grow.
I think it would be good for Hive.
I do so too, but this results that my upvotes mostly go to the same group of people and the rest often goes to photography blogs since I like that.
But I want to give some upvotes to promising projects every now and then too.
People can share cool stuff so it appears in my feed and then it may get my vote. If you share too much then I have to decide if you are worth following, so have to get the balance right.
But first 'they' need to get in your feed. I see I'm not even in your feed 🫨
But maybe that is a sign 😂
New projects don't quickly appear in your feed or mine or any other stakeholder.
They are flooded with all other posts on the blockchain.
Maybe it needs a community where people post about deserving posts and projects. I have to keep my feed manageable. You need to use the facilities Hive offers. I really don't want to join more Discord channels.
I might just create such a community. But then again we need to have stakeholders subscribe and look in the community every now and then for new projects.
Discord servers are easier to manage and to coordinate, but I'm also in too many servers myself 🤨
I feel people up top should organize contests, engagement and more real world onboarding which would help Hive blockchian collectively. Some crypto communities organize Twitter spaces and they onboard new people using X. So high HP users can do this enjoy along the way.
I think everyone should be doing this, but we could support these initiatives more.
I might have a bit of a stake here, I don't have just 190 followers on X. Most of which are Hivers already.
Theoretically, orcas and dolphins kind of match the power of whales on Hive. Practically, whales are fewer and unlike the former group, are in the habit of protecting their investment.
Being a large group, orcas and dolphins will never vote as a block. Tbh, neither do whales, most of the times. But for orcas and whales, it's practically impossible to make them have the same position on any matter, or any position at all. It takes a JS takeover event to awake the majority of the still-active relevant stakeholders to a governance matter, and even then, they will be divided, as history showed.
But I agree, orcas and dolphins should be more active in using their influence on Hive. Preferable by themselves, rather than delegating it away.
They don't need to have the same position on any matter. It would be nice if a group of orcas and dolphins could bundle their powers to support certain projects.
Such a hopeful, positive way of thinking both about Hive and the real world where the power of the people cannot be underestimated.
Let's see if there is more interest in this idea.
I think we then also need to overlay the duplicate account owners in that list, looking at them as entities, rather than people.
Many of those accounts in the top x are likely to be controlled by the same people, so an entity might account for the summation of the total.
Still, it is unlikely that group a remains larger than group b even when taking all that into consideration.
Yes, some people have their power spread out over multiple accounts. But all groups will have that.
It's also not the idea to create an us and them by the way. What I wanted to make clear is rhat we don’t have to depend on whale support to get things done on Hive.
If we manage to work together....
I'm already working out some ideas 😊
Thank you for clarifying your intent - my mind goes down the wrong rabbit holes some times :)
No problem. It might have not been clear enough about my intentions. I'm not a native English speaker, so that doesn't help.
There are more commenters that didn't get it 😊
I am a native English speaker, and I don't understand myself sometimes :D
🤣
This is the hive discordiant room, we have a small group that has mostly been exiled to blurt.
Anybody is free to join as it is public.
As you can imagine, absent whale level votes to buy some friends, the attendance is low.
But, they will come out of the woodwork, IF you say something interesting to them.
Thanks for sharing. I know there are some hivers that went to blurt, but I would like to focus on Hive. But it's a good example how likeminded people can bundle their powers.
I really enjoyed this post 🙏🏾
I think maybe some of the whale's who made most of their stake through vot selling should power down and burn some Hive
The whales have way to much control on hive
I've been getting downvoted for a long time now by one of the top whales on Hive who is the bosses right hand man maybe it could actually be the boss of Hive who controls it 🤔
Please stop 🛑 we all know it's blocktrades who is backing it
You have done nothing you think people don't talk in private and it gets leaked 😂

To be honest good luck to the Whales and Orcas, they have put in the work, effort and finance, they deserve everything they get in return. At my age I will never reach such dizzying heights, but it worries me not I am happy with my lot in life, better position than most, through hard work keeping my nose to the grindstone, I guess in the real world I am an Orca!
I really, no really fucking detest the politics of envy. Just live your life, work hard save diligently put in the effort and you will reap the rewards. Besides if one isn't happy one is always free to leave the hive for other places surely?
This is certainly not a rant against Hivers with a high stake. I'm not envyous. Maybe even te opposite 😀
This is not an 'I want more upvotes' or a way to set up a so-called 'circle jerking' group.
The idea behind this is to combine powers to support initiatives on Hive that are good for Hive and really could use some support.
As I look at my own upvote behaviour, I upvote 99% manually and tend to upvote the people I follow. If I have voting power left, I'll upvote photography posts.
It might be better for Hive if I, and other stakeholders would upvote initiatives that benefit Hive.
Hey @friendlymoose sorry crossed lines, I was not having a pop at you my friend, it was just a general pop at others I see on here who moan about the upper classes I once saw a post where the person said, "well I have been here 3 months now and haven't hooked a whale, no point in being here any more"
I think we have both been here as veterans in the hive and enjoy it for what it is
I didn't see it as an attack 😊
And I got your point.
I surely enjoy Hive, but also want to contribute a bit to make it even a bit better.
With you there 👍

And regarding creating a hub for orcas and dolphins, why not... It's worth trying, but I don't have too big expectations... Organizing a meeting of 5-10 people can be an issue, and doing something similar with over 50 is almost impossible...
On the other side, we do need a bit of "balancing out" on HIVE... When you have one group that is too strong, it can get out of control... It happened in real life, and it's happening nowadays too...
I don't want to sound like a pessimist, but the current HIVE setup needs a bit of tweaking... And I believe it will happen... The only thing we need is more open-minded discussions, compromises, and to lower our egos a bit... 😃
I've been thinking of ways to organize this. And the goal isn't to collectively vote on the same project. I'm thinking of ways to bring stakeholders and project owners together, so they can promote their project and stakeholders have a place to check for interesting projects.
For instance your @ourpick project. It's a cool project that is beneficial for Hive. I upvote the blogs when I'm mentioned in them, but they are not in my stream.
By having a central place with Hive projects, stakeholders that have some upvotes to share might choose to upvote in those projects that benefit Hive.
Personally I mostly upvote people I follow and then check the community feed and end up upvoting mostly photography posts.
I know a lot of people also upvote posts in the trending feed that often already have a lot of rewards.
Don't get me wrong; everyone should vote the way they want. I just want to make it easier to vote on projects that benefit Hive.
If everyone would do it like that, we would be much better positioned as crypto and as a social media platform... Unfortunately, people go for easier ways, automatic upvotes, delegating HP to whales waiting for breadcrumbs, etc.
I agree with you 100%. The lack of space (and visibility) for projects built on HIVE is a huge issue.. It was before, and it is today... Writing about them helps, talking too, but that's peanuts... We need more places for promoting not just HIVE to people outside, but HIVE tools for people from "inside"...
I'm having an idea to improve the latter... which might also have its effect on the first 😀
