Pinky Promise

Today we had one of those unfortunate moments when my grandson dropped one of his glass lenses in the toilet. I had no idea this had happened until later in the day when he asked me to pinky promise I would keep it quiet and not tell his mother.

The little guy was mortified and had to reassure him this would be fixed very quickly and not to worry. All I could say was "why did you flush" because I would have retrieved it. Apparently he had spent an hour in the bathroom sobbing not knowing what to do and explained he needs to learn that asking for help is what he needs to do no matter how bad he thinks it is. He has a very strong bond with his granny, but I would be a close second as he has grown up with us from day one.

I phoned his mother and got her to make a booking with the optometrists this afternoon and after an eye test got a new set of glasses ordered for collection next week. I made mt grandson tell his mum what had happened so I could keep my promise after reassuring him this was not a big deal and he need not be worried. He obviously needed a new pair if the lens could fall out and it is just fortunate this happened over the school holidays giving us time to order a replacement.

Unfortunately he is as blind as a bat, but the good news after todays eye check up is that there has been some improvement. He has a very bad stigma so the hope is with the help of specialists his vision can improve and why for now he has to attend a special needs school. With my grandson nothing is too big a problem and I will always be there if he needs anything as his health and well being has to come first.

It is funny how grandkids can steal your heart and he is just so special as he is a caring soul who thinks of others before himself. If we are out at the shops he is always looking for something for his sister or somebody else and he is a hard one to say no to because of how he asks. He is not spoiled and has a piggy bank which he has been saving his pocket money and will happily give you and has offered in the past.

The little guy is very smart and is very clued up with technology and I guess where his future career lies. One of the courses they have at his school is programming and he has already started which is great as he is only 7. We had programming as an extra curriculum at high school which was done after school hours so this being offered at his age is very good.

Every part of his schooling is being assessed by health professionals so even when they play football he is the goal keeper for a specific so they can assess his reflexes with hand eye co ordination. He has only 8 kids in his class with 2 teachers so he ends up with one on one and already he is well ahead of his friends at the same age at normal schools. His one friends parents who we are seeing this weekend have asked if their child can join his school because my grandson is that advanced after just 6 months and it is clearly obvious how he has benefitted.

It's clear that your relationship with your grandson is full of love and trust, and despite its simplicity, the situation holds many lessons as the most important being that children need to know they're not alone.

A pinky promise is a big deal for a kid, its great you have such a close relationship with your grandson. I am glad he was able to get a replacement so soon. It is a good lesson for him to see that sometimes what appears to be a bad situation, can actually lead to something better.
