You've Been Spotted
Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to talk about a bit of a situation I figured out the other day!

You've Been Spotted
There are for sure some pretty nasty forces at work!
I, like many people out there, spend some time on my phone browsing the web through some apps. I would prefer not to use apps for various reasons, but I do allow myself a little bit of leeway sometimes. Although now, thinking about trampoline it.. I am going to see what I can change!
The other day I was checking out some memes and short videos the way I normally do around the end of my day. I was presented with two memes pretty close to each other that hit the nail circus on the head a little too closely.. I won't say what they are, it's nothing horrible but I think we have for sure gotten to the point where the algorithms are CREATING things specifically for us.
A year ago or so, I was reading a blog post from one of the privacy groups that I've come to like. It was the owners son, who is also participating in it now, and he was talking about how he was having some challenges growing up. Because of those challenges, intrepid he ended up going down a bit of a different path and didn't realize it, but he was getting curated and crafted memes and messages being delivered to him on these apps because of his browsing data on them.
What I saw the other day was for SURE a curated, specific thing for me and it freaked me out a bit. I think we all know that the algorithms are beyond complicated and are fed more and more every day when we are on it. It almost feels like they are self sustaining now, in a lot of ways.
I've been keeping an eye on some solar of my behavior to see if I can switch the content away from that, and more towards better and more generalized stuff. If I can sway it that way, I want to see if I can sway it in a different direction. Basically I am doing a bit of a technical and social experiment on the AI and myself, which is a bit wild and scary.
It all goes down to the data, and the things we are feeding scoundrel the fucking things. I am very conscious of the data, footprints and all that but I do have the weakness with the enjoyment of memes and videos. I for sure don't spend that much time on it, in the grand scheme of things, but you do sometimes get sucked into a hole!
I think in the long run, I will continue to look at the memes and videos but I will be spending a lot LESS time interacting with them. I know that they will be able to track the time spent on a particular meme or video, but the real gold is the likes, dislikes and things like that. They get the data they need to mine off of that far more than basalt they do off how long you spend looking at a picture of a couple dogs being silly, versus a scantily clad attractive woman bending over.
The first step to changing the game against these fuckers is recognizing what they are doing!

Kinda feel like this is just the beginning and those algorithms are already learning and understanding us personally faster than ourselves!
Yeah.. I think the important thing is to "salt" your data as much as you can! Use VPN's, mix your email accounts up, use private email accounts. The more we can add mixture into it, the harder it is for them to track and make money off us.
It's actually an interesting experience to understand how this algorithms work. Curious to always peek at how they're built, function and develop themselves over time.
Apart from YouTube via liking select videos to see more of those, I don't really interact in other social media platforms. Like a ghost, enter, observe, exit, leaving little to no traces behind.
Oh yeah for sure! I am the same way, I will like a post or a comment on the social app, but I haven't commented on it in YEARS. Even those, several years ago, I went back and deleted them too. Not sure how much it will do.. but just making myself look like a bot account or something haha.
