Cocaine Hippos of Colombia and some Colombian Silver

This morning I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to discuss in my post today. Then I recalled an odd fact that many people don't know. Cocaine usage throughout the world in the 1980's resulted in the hippopotamus being introduced into Colombia. I also had a silver coin I was thinking of sharing in a post as well for some time, and the plan came together!

I'll start off with the coin, it's one I picked up in my years of living in South America. It's a nice silver coin from 1945 featuring Colombian hero Francisco de Paula Santander who was part of securing their independence from Spain and served as president as well. Have a look:

numista.com

It was minted in Bogota, Colombia and produced of 50% silver. Because it was a smaller denomination coin they must have decided to use less silver. It is a nice coin in pretty good condition, but not rare by any means. The silver value of the the coin when I checked this morning was $6.66, I kid you not. I'm sure the value has changed since then, maybe it's demonic coin?

The Cocaine Hippopotamuses of Colombia

Yes, there are wild hippopotamuses in South America. The story starts with notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar who smuggled more cocaine around the world in the late 1970's and 1980's than any other. He had his own estate outside of Medellín, Colombia with all sorts of attractions and entertainment. Among those were four hippos that he kept on the estate

from Wikipedia.org
Vanessa, one of the original four animals on the estate grounds

After Escobar was killed in 1993, the government seized all they could from the estate. However, it was decided the hippos were considered to difficult to seize and were left to roam the property. Soon they began to multiply and escaped the fenced property setting up camp in the Magdalena river. It is now estimated that there are around 200 and they are quickly spreading.

The hippos are considered an invasive species and there are worries it will damage the habitat for native animals. Not to mention they are very aggressive and have attacked some fisherman. The government is trying to relocate about 70 of the animals to India, and trying to control their numbers through sterilizing males. They managed to capture and castrate one male, however, it cost $50,000 to do so.

They are a tourist attraction now, and people head to Medellín to see the hippos. The trip is easier than Africa for many in the Americas! How long will the government allow them to stay? Who knows? So if you want to see them, you may have to do it soon. That is the story of the cocaine hippos, they all came from one very rich cocaine dealing drug lord...

That will wrap up my post for this Monday, I hope you enjoyed it! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. Thank you for all of your support, it is deeply appreciated! Have a great week everyone!

I never would have known that about the Hippos! Very interesting! When it comes to the bigger animals like that, I really don't know which ones are native to where.

They're African, but for some reason the population in Colombia sexually mature faster than in Africa. Inbreeding maybe? One thing I know is the last thing you want to run across while in a kayak is a hippo in the water. They are the most dangerous animal in Africa and kill more people per year than any other!

Hippos are fluffing scary. When I worked in Gabon we had a river in the jungle we used to go up in our dug our canoes. You held your breath when you went round hippo bend, hoping there weren't any in the water.

Pablo Escobar, now that was some character, so does not surprise me he imported hippos!

I wouldn't ever want to come across one in a canoe, they are dangerous animals! I'm glad you always made it around hippo bend without finding a territorial hippo!

Escobar was a ruthless drug lord, but had his own zoo on his "hacienda"!

Yeah we knew a couple of our local engineers who had lost family to them. They are the biggest killers in Africa apart from mosquitoes and us humans.
Ruthless I think is an understatement.

Interesting story about the cocaine druglord! I guess it doesn’t take long for hippos to propagate their species Lol!
Years ago I worked with a man called “Murdock” at a printing company in the remote mountains of Colorado.
Years later everyone discovered he was hiding out from the law enforcement, that he had smuggled 20 pounds of cocaine from South America and was living under this alias!😮
Strange times in my life Lol!😇

Apparently he wasn't too good at smuggling if they caught him! For some odd reason the hippos in Colombia reach sexual maturity faster than those in Africa, inbreeding maybe? Colorado is a pretty place though, but you live in a pretty nice place now and probably doesn't get quite as cold since you're closer to the ocean.

If you have a reliable vehicle it's doable. Is the trip safe through that part of Colombia these days? I remember back around 2000 they still had some rebel forces in some jungle regions. It's been a long time since I've kept up with the news down there!

Yeah, pretty sure it's not that save. I rather drive to Pasto Airport by bus, and then take a plane to Medellin. Not many rebels in the sky.

I enjoy your blog, @thebighigg !
I didn't realize there are hippo in Columbia. I know there are drug lords in Columbia... they are also aggressive, invasive and destroys not only fishermen but families in general.

Thank you, you are so sweet! The drug lords are pretty much gone in Colombia these days, Peru has picked up more of the cocaine business now. Fortunately cocaine isn't as popular as it once was, which is why they focus more on fentanyl and meth.

I wouldn't want to mess with a hippo for sure!
