[ITA/ENG] Happy Mother's Day

My husband is strongly convinced that more women than men are born in the world because — you know — statistically, there are more women (which, by the way, is a leftover belief from past decades, since nowadays there are actually more males than females globally). And above all, it is known that science says (because my husband loves to add a scientific validation for any thesis he presents) there are seven women for every man.

I tried to explain that female and male have the same probability of occurring in large numbers (that is, a 50% chance) since the sex chromosome is either X or Y. I also said that the whole seven women for every man idea is kind of like the promise of the 50 virgins in Paradise.

I even tried using advanced statistics, bringing in factors like women having a longer life expectancy due to the X chromosome and female hormones — which makes it mathematically expected that, in old age, the ratio would shift to a bit more women and a bit fewer men. But even that isn't true everywhere, because it also depends a lot on factors like development levels, pregnancy risks, discrimination, etc., etc., etc.

He stared at me intently and silently for about ten seconds, honoring such wisdom. Then his gaze magically drifted from me to the TV screen, and he sweetly resumed munching peanuts.

I don’t think I convinced him.

With the theory that women are protected by female hormones and therefore have a longer life expectancy (which, given today’s stress, isn't even that true anymore), my husband justifies going to bed with a simple cold, demanding cuddles, herbal tea, and those little biscuits that have a Proustian Madeleine effect from In Search of Lost Time, reminding him of childhood flavors.

He justifies not being able to wash the dishes with cold water because he might catch a cold, nor with hot water, which uses energy and causes limescale buildup — with devastating effects on the family economy, the plumbing and his children’s future.

And of course, he still thinks the clothes left on the living room chair magically fly into the drawers at night — clean and ironed — like the Befana in the day of the Epiphany (who, however, only comes once a year).

So today, after the third load of laundry, I want to wish all women a Happy Mother’s Day.

To those who left us always too soon and live on in our hearts, to the elderly ones we visited or called today, and to those like me — waiting for a flower — between one load of laundry and the next... of course!

Mio marito è convinto che al mondo nascano più donne che uomini perché - si sa - statisticamente siamo di più (cosa che tra l’altro è un retaggio degli anni passati perché oggi nel mondo le persone di sesso maschile sono più di quelle di sesso femminile) e soprattutto si sa che la scienza (perché mio marito ama apporre questa parola quando sciorina una tesi per validarla) conferma con assoluta certezza che al mondo ci sono sette donne per ogni uomo.

Ho provato a spiegare che femmina e maschio hanno la stessa probabilità di realizzarsi sui grandi numeri (ovvero una probabilità del 50%) in quanto il cromosoma sessuale o è X o è Y e anche perché le sette donne per sette uomini sono un po’ come le promesse delle 50 vergini in Paradiso.
Ho provato anche con la statistica avanzata, immettendo fattori come quelli per cui le donne hanno una aspettativa di vita più lunga proprio per il cromosoma X e gli ormoni femminili, e per questo sarebbe matematico che, in vecchiaia, la proporzione si sposti su un po’ più donne e un po’ meno uomini. Ma che comunque questo non è vero in tutti i paesi, in quanto dipende anche molto da fattori di sviluppo, numerosità e pericolosità delle gravidanze, discriminazioni etc etc etc.

Mi ha guardato attentamente e fissamente per circa dieci secondi onorando cotanta saggezza in silenzio. Poi il suo sguardo si è spostato magicamente da me alla televisione e ha ricominciato a sgranocchiare amabilmente noccioline.

Non credo di averlo convinto.

Anzi, con la teoria che le donne siano protette dagli ormoni femminili e quindi abbiano una aspettativa di vita maggiore (che poi con lo stress di oggi non è nemmeno più tanto vero) mio marito giustifica di potersi mettere a letto con un banale raffreddore pretendendo coccole, tisane e quei biscottini che gli fanno effetto Madelaine di Proust nella Ricerca del tempo perduto ricordandogli i sapori dell’infanzia.
Giustifica di non poter lavare i piatti con l’acqua fredda perché potrebbe venirgli un raffreddore e nemmeno con l’acqua calda, che consuma energia e fa precipitare il calcare, con effetti devastanti sull’economia familiare, l’impianto idrico e il futuro dei suoi figli.

E ovviamente continua a pensare che i panni lasciati sulla sedia del salone tornino puliti e stirati nel cassetto volando di notte come la Befana (che però passa una volta all’anno).

E allora oggi, dopo la terza lavatrice, voglio augurare a tutte le donne Buona Festa della mamma.

A quelle che ci hanno lasciato sempre troppo presto e che vivono nei nostri cuori, a quelle anziane che siamo andati a trovare o alle quali abbiamo telefonato oggi e a quelle come me - che aspettano un fiore - fra una lavatrice e l’altra.
