Abandoned by His Mother, Found by Us: The Story of Fuffi
In this post, I will tell you the story of Fuffi, a little kitten abandoned by its mother and found by us.
On June 28, 2025, my wife, my daughter, and I went to Santa Maria di Leuca to spend a weekend at the beach with my in-laws.
We thought it would be a weekend like any other spent in this beautiful seaside location, but it turned out to be a special weekend because when we arrived, we heard a meow coming from a corner of the house's courtyard.
My father-in-law, who had arrived two days earlier, immediately informed us that when he went into the courtyard to water the plants, he found four little kittens behind the sage plant.
He also told us that on the same day, the mother cat took three kittens away but left one behind.
When I went to look, I found a very small white kitten curled up in the shade of the sage, breathing very slowly and with one eye visibly swollen.
The kitten was abandoned by its mother on Thursday afternoon, and we arrived on Saturday, so this kitten hadn't eaten for two days.
The first thing we did was look for the phone numbers of animal rescue organizations.
Searching the web, I found the phone numbers of two nearby associations, but neither answered my calls or messages.
At this point, we contacted a friend who loves cats and works for an association in my city that rescues abandoned kittens.
This friend advised us to buy milk for small kittens and try to feed the kitten with a syringe.
None of the nearby pharmacies had kitten milk, and even the pet stores didn't have milk for kittens that were only a few days old.
Our friend advised us to give goat's milk as emergency milk, and I managed to find some in a supermarket about 5 miles away.
After warming the goat's milk a little, we put it in a syringe and my wife tried to feed the little kitten.
It wasn't easy, but with a little persistence, the kitten managed to drink some milk.
As you can see from the photos, the kitten had one eye closed and visibly swollen.
We tried to feed him with goat's milk every 3-4 hours.
Such a small kitten is unable to urinate on its own because mother cats stimulate their kittens with their tongues to help them urinate and defecate.
My wife put on a latex glove, wet a sterile gauze pad with warm water, and stimulated the kitten, which immediately urinated a lot.
The next morning, the kitten's eye had deflated on its own, leaving a visible brown spot.
Unfortunately, the photos I took came out blurry because the kitten was crying and moving around.
To keep the kitten warm, we filled a hot water bottle, wrapped it in paper, and placed the kitten and the bottle in a cardboard box.
Such a tiny kitten, abandoned by his mother, cried almost continuously, perhaps hoping that its mother would return.
But its mother never came back, and it touched our hearts with its desire to live, or rather, to survive.
My family consists of my wife, my daughter Chiara, myself, and two four-year-old cats.
The first cat to join our family is called Cuki, and we took him in after finding him in the engine of our car.

As with Cuki, we had no doubts about this kitten, whom my daughter named Fuffi: we didn't know if we would keep him with us, but we had one firm goal: to save him!
On Monday morning, we left to return to my city, and Fuffi accompanied us with almost continuous crying for 370 km.
The first stop on the return trip to my city was the vet, hoping to save Fuffi, an adorable white kitten abandoned by his mother but with a great will to live!
The vet confirmed what we already feared: Fuffi was very thin and dehydrated.
At the same time, he told us that the fact that he was still alive after two days without eating was already a small miracle.
However, he was not out of danger: if he made it through the first week, then he would have a good chance of survival.
For his inflamed eye, he prescribed an antibiotic ointment to be applied several times a day.
From that moment on, our days began to revolve around Fuffi: feeding every three hours, constant warmth, stimulation for his needs, and endless doses of cuddles.

In questo post vi racconto la storia di Fuffi un piccolo gattino abbandonato dalla mamma e trovato da noi.
Il 28 giugno 2025 io, mia moglie e mia figlia siamo andati a Santa Maria di Leuca per trascorrere un weekend al mare in compagnia dei miei suoceri.
Pensavamo che sarebbe stato un weekend come altri passati in questa bella località turistica e invece è stato un weekend particolare perchè quando siamo arrivati abbiamo sentito un miagolio provenire da un angolo del cortile della casa.
Mio suocero che era arrivato due giorni prima ci ha subito informato che quando è andato nel cortile per innaffiare le piante ha trovato quattro gattini piccoli dietro la pianta della salvia.
Ci ha anche raccontato che lo stesso giorno la mamma dei gattini ha preso tre gattini e se li è portati via ma ha lasciato un gattino.
Quando sono andato a vedere ho trovato un piccolo gattino bianco rannicchiato all'ombra della salvia che respirava molto lentamente e con un occhio visibilmente gonfio.
Il gattino è stato abbandonato dalla mamma il giovedì sera mentre noi siamo arrivati di sabato e quindi questo gattino non mangiava da due giorni.
La prima cosa che abbiamo fatto è stata di cercare i numeri di telefono di associazioni che salvano gli animali.
Cercando sul web ho trovato i contatti telefonici di due associazioni vicine ma nessuna ha risposto alle mie telefonate e ai miei messaggi.
A questo punto abbiamo contattato un'amica che ama i gatti e che lavora in un'associazione nella mia città che si occupa di salvare i gattini abbandonati.
Quest'amica ci ha consigliato di comprare del latte per gattini piccoli e provare ad alimentare il gattino con una siringa.
Nessuna delle farmacie vicine aveva il latte per gattini e anche i negozi per animali non avevano latte per gattini di pochi giorni.
La nostra amica ci ha consigliato di dare il latte di capra come latte di emergenza e io sono riuscito a trovarlo in un supermercato a circa 8 km di distanza.
Dopo aver riscaldato il latte di capra lo abbiamo messo in una siringa e mia moglie ha provato a far bere il piccolo gattino.
Non è stato facile ma con un pò di insistenza il gattino ha bevuto un poco di latte.
Come puoi vedere dalle foto il gattino aveva un occhio chiuso e visibilmente gonfio.
Abbiamo cercato di alimentarlo con il latte di capra ogni 3-4 ore.
Un gattino così piccolo non è in grado di fare la pipì da solo perchè le mamme gatto stimolano i gattini con la lingua per indurli a fare i bisogni.
Mia moglie ha indossato un guanto in lattice, ha bagnato con acqua calda una garza sterile e ha stimolato il gattino che ha fatto subito molta pipì.
La mattina del giorno dopo l'occhio del gattino si era sgonfiato da solo lasciando una macchia visibile marrone.
Purtroppo le foto che ho fatto sono uscite sfocate perchè il gattino piangeva e si muoveva.
Per tenerlo al caldo abbiamo riempito una bottiglia di acqua calda, l'abbiamo avvolta con della carta e abbiamo messo il gattino e la bottiglia in un cartone.
Un gattino così piccolo, abbandonato dalla mamma, ha pianto quasi continuamente forse sperando che la mamma tornasse da lui.
Ma la mamma non è mai tornata da lui e lui ci ha intenerito il cuore con la sua voglia di vivere o meglio di sopravvivere.
La mia famiglia è composta da me, mia moglie, mia figlia Chiara e due gatti che hanno quattro anni.
Il primo gatto che è entrato nella nostra famiglia si chiama Cuki e lo abbiamo accolto nella famiglia dopo averlo trovato nel motore della macchina.

Come per Cuki anche per questo gattino che mia figlia ha chiamato Fuffi non abbiamo avuto nessun dubbio: non sapevamo se l'avremmo tenuto con noi ma avevamo un solo e fermo obiettivo: salvarlo!
Il lunedi mattina siamo partiti per ritornare nella mia città e Fuffi ci ha accompagnato con un pianto quasi continuo per 370 km.
Prima tappa del viaggio di ritorno nella mia città è stata il veterinario sperando di riuscire a salvare Fuffi, un adorabile gattino bianco abbandonato dalla mamma ma con tanta voglia di vivere!
Il veterinario ci ha confermato quello che già temevamo: Fuffi era molto magro e disidratato.
Allo stesso tempo ci ha detto che il fatto che fosse ancora vivo dopo due giorni senza mangiare era già un piccolo miracolo.
Non era però fuori pericolo: se avesse superato la prima settimana allora avrebbe avuto buone possibilità di farcela.
Per l’occhio infiammato ci ha prescritto un antibiotico in pomata da applicare più volte al giorno.
Da quel momento le nostre giornate hanno iniziato a ruotare attorno a Fuffi: poppate ogni tre ore, calore costante, stimolazione per i bisogni e infinite dosi di coccole.
Ma la storia di Fuffi non finisce qui… perchè continuerà nel prossimo post.

Ciao, anch'io di recente ho provato a salvare un gattino, ma non è sopravvissuto. Sono felice per Fuffi, è un gesto molto carino da parte della tua famiglia. Spero di continuare a leggere la storia e spero che sopravviva alla prima e a tutte le settimane.
Mi dispiace che il tuo gattino non è sopravvissuto ma quando sono piccoli sono molto fragili e anche con le migliori cure possono morire.

He looks so fragile … Try buying a little bottle from a pet shop. This recently happened to me and I was giving it goat milk, he is all grown up climbing up the curtains now. I wish you the best and kudos for taking up this responsibility 🙏
I'm glad to hear that your kitten has grown up healthy and lively too.
As soon as I got back to the city and after visiting the vet, I went to a pet store and bought a bottle and some kitten milk. In my next post, I'll show you Fuffi in better health ;)

Si hai perfettamente ragione l'ho usato anche io due volte per me ma questa è stata la prima volta che l'ho usato ed ha funzionato benissimo perchè l'occhietto di fuffi adesso è perfetto e nel prossimo post lo potrai vedere molto più in salute.

Quite a touching story, it is commendable all you have done for that little cat. I still remember when I tried to do the same, almost everything you did, I found a small cat abandoned behind a rubber, but he looked weaker and despite my attempts he was not saved. I still feel nostalgic about that event.

Yes, it hurt me a lot, I still remember that moment and my eyes get blurry, I only have the satisfaction of having done the best I could for him, I gave him the best care.

Your musafa is really beautiful, and her different-colored eyes are a lovely feature.
My Fuffi has two blue eyes, but with brown spots in both of them.
I don't know. It has similar features to a Turkish Angora, but its fur is quite short. It also has similar traits to a Khao Manee, but since it's the son of a street cat, I think it's a crossbreed.
