Cristkindlmarket

The Christkindlmarket is Chicago's beloved holiday tradition that sets up in Daley Plaza around the base of the Picasso sculpture every holiday season. Inspired by the 16th-century Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, Germany, it has grown into a massive cultural seasonal event.

"The Picasso," one of Chicago's most iconic landmarks, was a gift to the people of Chicago from Pablo Picasso in 1967. It looms over the market booths, looking down at the festivities.

Must-try items include massive soft pretzels, Bratwurst, and Leberkäse (German meatloaf). For dessert, many look for Gebrannte Mandeln (roasted cinnamon sugar almonds) and Lebkuchen (gingerbread).

Käthe Wohlfahrt: This world-famous vendor is a staple at the market, offering intricate glass ornaments, nutcrackers, and traditional German Christmas pyramids.

Admission is free, but Cristkindlmarket ended on Christmas Eve. It's always something to look forward to for next year!

Wow would you look at all those people enjoying the holidays with eachother and upholding tradition from abroad. That warrants some national guard to stifle all that crime ;) Kudos to your city for being a great example of pushing back against the hate and celebrating together!

Like any big city, Chicago has crime, mental illness and homelessness, but there are also great people and wonderful areas of the city to enjoy. The national guard was never necessary.

Spotless is the first thing that comes to mind.

The North is clean.

But... we Aficans have the sunshine, double heat and The Time.

Mostly :)

Interesting observation. As far as litter goes, most areas are clean. I am sometimes shocked with the photos I see of places where the ground is covered with debris. But there are other ways that we harm the earth that are not so visible.

It is so noticable for we South Africans because, out here, it's pretty third world still and litter is the last thing on peoples' minds. Survival is more important.

It can get pretty hectic out here. Like Bali (but that is mostly tourist related, I suspect)

Very pretty, up North!

Happy NY to you, M :D <3

I hope the year ahead is prosperous and peaceful for ya

This is the benefit of holidays, it gives you the opportunity to celebrate together. Every person forgets about their work and spends some of the most beautiful time of their life with their friends and family.

It's always fun to see a whole city of strangers coming together and celebrating a cultural event.

Thanks for the New Years greeting! I hope 2026 is a good year for all of us.
We are a nation of immigrants. Unless they are Native Americans, every person in this country has ancestors who came here from another country, some more recently than others.
