Back from the dead

My son in law is a magician at bringing cars back from the dead!

He finds old cars that he likes and makes them useable again. This old 1971 Super Beetle heap is his current project. He has performed his artistry on over 20 cars over the years, making cars that are often not driveable into roadworthy vehicles

He paid $500 for this 'car', and for that price the seller even delivered it! It is the canvas for him to perform his artistry on!

He had to buy fenders, and fabricate brackets to hold the bumpers on.

He does all the body work and painting himself.

The interior was completed with a new headliner and all new carpeting after he took the seats out. The front seats came from a Toyota Camry in the junkyard, and the rear was covered in a surprising fabric. Just for fun, radio speakers were mounted in an old suitcase.

Too bad 3Spk is still undergoing maintainence or I would have included a video of the car driving down the street.

The major work was all completed before it became too cold to work in the garage. It is running, but the motor will be taken out and completely redone in the spring

A big difference from where he began!

I wouldn't believe it was a scratch if I saw this car on the street. Amazing skill, how long does it take to be a complete makeover? Is it expensive?

It took him 3 months working after he came home from work in the evenings and on weekends. I do not know how much money he spent.

Ohhhh I loved this!!! Beetle is one of my favourite classic cars. Your son in law did a fantastic work. The light blue color is so beautiful. 🤩

I like the color combo, too. He said he is not happy with the quality of the paint, so I would not be surprised if it gets repainted again in the spring!

A "Käfer" in German. Every time I see one of these cars on the road, it brings back fond memories of my youth. Unfortunately, you rarely see them driving around anymore.

I have fond memories, too! I remember being surprised when I first saw the engine in the rear!

It looks like new. My neighbor has also restored one old VW Beetle and one old Citroen. But you know, you have to have the time and a workshop for such a hobby :)

What a beautiful work of art! Those old bugs are relatively easy to fix up fortunately, but he put a lot of work into that detailing and the engine as well I bet. That came out really nice!

Did you ever do automotive work? It's all a bit of a mystery to me!
