A Chicago Christmas tradition
Marshall Field's was a Chicago-based department store that is considered a Chicago Landmark. It featured lavish interiors, including a grand clock, the famous Walnut Room restaurant and a vaulted glass ceiling designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. .
When I was a kid it was a big deal to go into the city to see the Christmas windows at Field's and get all dressed up to eat lunch in the Walnut Room.
The company was founded in 1852 and was known for its innovative customer service policies. "Give the lady what she wants" and "The customer is always right" are attributed to Field.
In 1946, Field's introduced the popular storytelling windows, which told a continuous story that unfolded as people walked from one window to the next.
11 windows were used to tell the story along the State Street side of the store.

The 2004 Marshall Field's Christmas window displays on State Street in Chicago featured a Snow White theme, inspired by the fairy tale, "The Fairest Tale of All," with animated figurines telling the story in the windows.
These hand-made, one-of-a-kind pieces of animated history were designed to be viewed by the public. More of these iconic pieces of Chicago history can also be seen at The Museum of Science and Industry.

The displays are renowned for their intricate, hand-made, one-of-a-kind animated figurines and elaborate sets, which are now part of the collection at the Museum of Science and Industry. The animated windows were unveiled at the end of November, usually after Thanksgiving. I have brief videos of that show the figures moving, but they are difficult to include here.
The massive displays were a huge undertaking. A large staff of skilled workers often spent more than a year creating the holiday windows.

These unique and animated window displays were considered a treasured part of Chicago's holiday traditions, drawing visitors from around the globe.
The famous State Street flagship store was acquired by Macy's in 2006,The historic building still exists and is now the Macy's on State Street. which retains many of the original store's features, such as the Walnut Room and themed holiday window displays.
This Christmas season Macy's is honoring Marshall Fields history.

Life is full of details, what a beautiful idea to give life to those shop windows. I'm glad that the tradition is maintained. Thank you for showing these magical places.
It is a treasured Christmas tradition!
Nice story and lovely puppets!

They do an incredible job.
Will you be joining us over at blurt?
I'm too attached to Ecency and it gets my online focus, although I do occasionally stop by to catch up with old friends who have been chased away from Hive. Far too many longtime friends have moved on
I hear that Ecency guys are slightly considering the prospect of moving away from hive, just like the Leo guys are doing, and allying with Blurt?
Could be hearsay. I dunno.
If so, please let the Ecency guys know, Blurt is in need of allies. Would be a blessing to have you guys come over.
Simply hearsay. There is no truth to those rumors about Ecency.
I thank you for confirming
Why did they leave? Where to?
Usually because they were put on a downvote list that was impossible to remove themselves from. Many have moved to Blurt because, like Hive, it is a hardfork from Steem and is familiar, without having downvotes there.
Thanks for your efficiency in digging deep in history because you have disclosed to me that "The Customer is always right" is attributed to Field's.Also thank you for the Pictures of puppets they remind me of "Sound of Music" Film in years Enjoy your night rest.
The theme changed each year and included The Night Before Christmas Paddington Bear, and Harry Potter. The sidewalk does get crowded, and the wait is sometimes long to have lunch in the store's restaurant.
Thanks for sharing the photos and story, it was interesting.

It is part of Chicago Christmas!
The "Prince" exhibition & Snow White" looks very erotic. It seems to me that in our city this would immediately cause outrage from the elderly. These are the times we have now.
By the way, they are already fining 15k rubles for Halloween expositions. That's about $200 at the current exchange rate.
Dwarves are like gangsters :)
I do like the Disney version of dwarfs much better!
The Prince does appear to have his hand on her leg! Shocking indeed! 😂
The animation has him lean in for a kiss.
Unreal about Halloween being illegal!
It's such a fun holiday.
Those figures are exquisitely created. I'm sure that was really something exciting to see in the real.
For a half of a second when I first saw your post, I thought the first doll was holding her nose. LOL !! Of course I then realized she was not and it made me laugh at what my brain did to it.
In the animation her hand goes to her forehead as she faints away after eating the apple. The photo could have been better timed! 😂
does the vibes still the same until now?
if not, at least the figurine, and the story still continue till this day. I also would love to see it, the beautiful figurine while walking at the street. Hope the street will not be that crowded. ;0

What charming dolls! How wonderfully they express emotions.
The windows are always fun to see each year. They have done displays of Pinocchio, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and the Nutcracker, among many others
Your photos are beautiful. Congratulations. Have a happy day.
Thanks!
The Christmas spirit is waking up! These figurines are bringing up some great memories from my childhood... We had similar "expositions" in some of the shopwindows, with snowy, Christmas themes, and it was always interesting to stop by, and to imagine yourself among those figurines... 😃
Thanks for sharing and bringing the Christmas spirit to HIVE! 🥂

Love the work put into these displays. All to pull you into the holiday spirit and into the store lol but no blatant displays of what was on sale. And the tradition of the nice restaurants in the grand old department stores. In Minneapolis the regional department store was Daytons. I remember going to their restaurant and having pop overs and wild rice soup for a nice lunch. My wife worked at Macy's in the 2000's when all the consolidation was going on in the department stores. Eventually Macy's owned a lot of the regional chains and rebranded them as Macy's.

I miss the grand old department stores, but Macys is doing an adequate job of keeping the traditions alive! I remember going on a Christmas shopping trip to Minneapolis with some lady friends and of course buying gifts at Daytons. It was the first time a phone call from Mastercard was made to my home asking if an authorised person in MN was making charges to my credit card. 😅
Beautifull place and interesting history. Thank you
