[ MONOMAD ] - Sculptures and Memories

I'm here to share a memory of my younger years (I've finally made up my mind 😅) - inspiration, let's say, as I haven't published anything here for a while now.

A few days ago I took a stroll through Vedado, a very central Havana neighbourhood, and while I was walking, I remembered my university days.

Hace unos días me di una vueltecita por el Vedado, un barrio habanero muy céntrico, y mientras caminaba, recordaba mi época universitaria.

This is the final stretch of Avenida de los Presidentes or G, as it is also known, and I know it backwards and forwards because the Faculty of Communication, where I studied, was then located between the 21st and 23rd streets.

I was telling you that the monument you see in the photo is where G ends, but that if we take the sea as the beginning of the Avenue, otherwise it would be the beginning.

It's just that it's at an elevation and normally you tend to think of reaching the top as the end, right? Well, it's not. For some, the top of Avenue G may just be the beginning.

So I'll tell you one of the things I always remember when I'm near this place.

It turns out that when I arrived in Havana when I was about 18 years old, that great monument dedicated to José Miguel Gómez, one of the first presidents of Cuba, was full of graffiti, abandoned and its sculptural ensembles did not look like they do today.

It was painful to even walk by because of the dirt that had and continued to accumulate there. The place also lent itself to unscrupulous people as a suitable place to commit misdeeds. I believe there came a time when it was considered for demolition.

Luckily, the Office of the City Historian, led by Eusebio Leal Spengler, carried out an awareness campaign to recover it, and so it was done.

What I haven't told you is that the graffiti and that image of the monument stayed in my memory forever, I was a bit afraid of all those drawings and inscriptions and at the same time, they caused me a certain fascination.

This is my participation in the #Monomad Challenge. I think I was lucky that day, as the light was very even.

When you look at it, it might seem that you are travelling back in time and at this moment you are in Rome... (I wish I could) 🤣

In some bibliographies, it is mentioned as a curious fact that its creator, the Italian sculptor Giovanni Nicolini, was inspired by the works of his peer Sacconi (1910), in homage to the first king of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II.

Te decía que ese monumento que se ve en la foto está donde acaba G, pero eso es si tomamos como comienzo de la Avenida el mar, pues de lo contrario, sería su inicio.

Es que está en una elevación y normalmente se tiende a considerar el alcanzar la cima como el fin, ¿verdad? Pues no. Para algunos la cima de la Avenida G puede ser solo el comienzo.

Entonces te contaré una de las cosas que siempre recuerdo cuando estoy cerca de este lugar. Resulta que cuando llegué con unos 18 añitos a La Habana, ese gran monumento, dedicado a José Miguel Gómez, uno de los primeros presidentes de Cuba, estaba lleno de grafitis, abandonado y sus conjuntos escultóricos no se veían como se ven hoy.

Era doloroso hasta pasar por allí por la suciedad que tenía y se seguía acumulando en él. El lugar también se prestaba para que personas sin escrúpulos lo tuvieran como idóneo para cometer fechorías. Creo que llegó un momento en que se consideró demolerlo.

Por suerte, la Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad, liderada por Eusebio Leal Spengler, llevó una campaña de sensibilización para recuperarlo y así se hizo.

Lo que no te he contado es que aquellos grafitis y aquella imagen del monumento se quedó en mi memoria para siempre, me daban un poco de temor todos aquellos dibujos e inscripciones y al mismo tiempo causaban en mí cierta fascinación.

Esta es mi participación en el #Monomad Challenge. Creo que tuve suerte ese día, pues la luz estuvo muy pareja.

Al mirarla, puede parecer que viajas en el tiempo y al momento estás en Roma... (ojalá pudiera) 🤣

En algunas bibliografías, se menciona como dato curioso que su creador, el escultor italiano Giovanni Nicolini, se inspiró en las obras de su coetáneo Sacconi (1910), en homenaje al primer rey de Italia, Víctor Manuel II.
