Lisbon narrow streets bw 3.jpg

The old part of Lisbon is filled with very narrow, twisty streets and old, scruffy buildings. Most of them barely fit a car. That's why it's so cool to walk around them. Sometimes a bike or a little tuk tuk with tourists will pass you by, but most of the time it's quite peaceful and quiet, even though it is almost the heart of the big and very busy city.

Just a few minutes away are the restaurants, coffee shops, fancy boutiques, and all the city communication you can get.

Please notice the stickers on the first photo :p.

It seems like a completely different world and different city sometimes. Like if you traveled in time when people were not in such a hurry all the time. They take their time to enjoy a cup of coffee and chat with a neighbour.
Pots with plants on the balconies and in front of the entrances, laundry hanging outside the balconies, and older people smiling at you from their windows.

A lot of the area looks abandoned, which surprises me since the location is very attractive. Or maybe they are just neglected by the current owners, who cannot afford the renovation.
Who knows. Though it is a pity to see them in this state, I still enjoy walking around the more scruffy parts.

Pigeons can always find a quiet spot to rest there too. The modern buildings and the historical ones that belong to the city have protections against them. They sit around the older houses where nobody bothers them.

The refreshing view of the Tagus River and one of the gazillion churches. That's where the scruffiness disappears, and it feels like a capital again.

It's beautiful really. I love the BnW photos. I can hear the quiet.

How funny that I did not notice the stickers until you pointed them out, and now they are the focus of the shot. Cool effect!

Haha :D They are way more visible in B&W than they were in colour. I didn't see them when I was shooting.

(Edited)

Every city has its nooks and crannies (in Spanish this sounds funny "recovecos") Good shots.

I loved the photos, besides the black and white was great in them, I really like the photography of streets and small alleys like those, they have great aesthetics.

Holy heavens, what a "paradise" for street photography (especially for editing in black and white I think) are those Lisbon's nooks and crannies!!! Great shots @ewkaw friend!... Thanks a lot for sharing!!!...

Every time I see pictures of Lisbon it's like watching a movie. I've always loved the feeling that black and white gives to this style of photography!

I completely missed the stickers on the pole not until you mentioned it.
A modern vandal in the old town. : )
It must be really expensive to renovate the building there, because of the small road. Transporting the machinery and the material can really be abig problem isn't it?

Hahaha I actually didn't see it either until I edited the photo :D

It probably is. But somehow people do it anyway. I think it's more of a money problem. A lot of the old flats are owned by older people.

Great post, @ewkaw! Every time that I'm on the city center part, there is absolutely no way that I don't take te opportunity to capture some B&W photos. Lisbon has a melancholic yet intoxicating song that is completely inherent to it. I love getting lost in the alleys of the old streets and absorbing everything they convey. There was a time when I used to wander them more at night, especially when I was a student, but recently the light of day has brought out details that make them stand out even more.

And this is a reason Lisbon is on my list to go. Amazing streets and old architecture are just to die for. And when you get a light like you had and a good eye like you have...

You should visit then :) Try outside the most busy times - summer. Its still full of people.. but at least its not boiling hot.

I would definitely follow by these streets, the other ones in Baixa and Chiado or Terreiro do Paço were so croweded the last time I visited Lisbon that I felt I was in a nightmare!!

Some seem always crowded. But for some reason just the ones next to them are almost completely empty.

I know! I lived in downtown for six months in 2010 and I used to use those streets on my way to Chiado train station. But tourism increased a lot since that time 😅
