Rust Never Sleeps

(Edited)

Got to keep moving. Rust never sleeps. Stop and the rust will get you. Can feel it creeping up on you sometimes, accompanied by inertia and an indeterminable dissatisfaction. You catch yourself shaking your fist at all your photos, you know it's time to break out the sledgehammer and WD-40.

Time to do something new, something different, something more. To step up your game and play for higher stakes. Good luck with the what and how of that.

Been kicking around the bones of an idea for a while now, seems like a good time to see if any of y'all are interested in helping flesh it out. So here goes nothing.

Normally we're all competing for a slice of the same rewards pool, which is a rather zero-sum setup that doesn't always make for the most bonhomie atmosphere. It don't have to be all competition though, why not leverage the global network we have at our fingertips to collaborate? Use Hive to create something larger than any one of us. My initial thought was use Hive to put together some (or many) sort of collective photo book or photo project, possibly with an eye towards submitting it to some of the zillion photo contests out there. I'm primarily interested in seeing what we could create but presenting the projects somewhere outside the blockchain would be an easy way to get Hive some good publicity.

With so many great photographers on here, doing such a range of photography, don't think we have to worry about restricting ourselves to a single topic or format. So who's down for a little group work? Got any ideas for topics?

At the end of the day I'd like for my photography to help make the world a better or at least more interesting place. With the community(s) we have on here it shouldn't be too difficult to use photography to bring people together. This being the era of the 24-hour bad news cycle, we could all probably use a little more of that.

All photos from my visit to St. Louis in October. @ninahaskin we were talking about a hive project not too long ago, you got any ideas?

Thanks! That's not a bad idea, may have to keyword them and throw them up on some stock sites.

A great choice of main image...but all are good and probably equally main image worthy.

I hope you're well. If we don't run into each other before Christmas, I hope you have a nice one and as the end of the year comes to a close you have some goals and plans for 2024 that'll make it a great one.

All the best.

Thank you sir. You ever make it to St. Louis?

Hey old-timer, good to see you around these parts :) I got no complaints worth listening to, that's near enough to the same thing, isn't it? Hopefully we'll run into each other before Christmas but if not, have a helluva one. Still jealous of your Christmas weather. Got a few I'm chewing on but you know what Moltke said about plans...

I've not been there but have heard good things, I'd like to go there someday.

Our weather is looking good, cool at the moment, 20-22C, but it's looking like 25-28 through to after Christmas which is pretty perfect for me. Last year we had 38-42C so luckily it's not that hot.

I hope y'all have a great run into Christmas and 2024 kicks ass (in a good way.)

I've never gotten to give it the attention it deserves, just a day or two here and there but it's a fun place to visit.

They're saying it's supposed to be 14-15C here, which is warm for this time of year here. Last year we had snow and ice, I'll take 42 over that any day :)

You too man, hope you have a good'un.

It is exactly like when there are problems in a person's life, then a person does not feel good about anything, nor does he sleep on time, the mind always works like this.

I’ve been away a while again( both physically and from the blockchain) so nice to come back and see you’re still bringing it! Was in Florida and sadly was so wrapped up in what I was there for I didn’t get much in the way of shots. Your proposal has me thinking though. What could we do as a collective collaboration on here. Hmmmm, wheels a turning

Been hanging out with Florida Man? Wouldn't know what to do with myself if I wasn't trying to stir something up :) Lol, you're the first person that's actually responded to the proposal part of my post. I'm interested to hear what you come up with, I feel like it could be something that's both fun and beneficial. Got a few ideas myself, didn't want to steer the conversation too much but it's looking like I'm going to need something more concrete before I get much buy-in.

Hmm I'm not sure, it's a tough one. I've been racking my brains with this for a few days and havn't come up with much. I like your Idea of submitting Images to maybe be used in a book of somesort. You had any further thoughts on it?

So I will probably flesh this out in the near future for another blog but this is a rough outline:

Thesis: Nobody understands shit until they see/experience it for themselves. Create projects that both showcase all the similarities and celebrate all the vast variety within humanity.

Idea #1 "Home" Have people submit a single image that best captures their notion of "home". Wide latitude in interpreting prompt, collect the results (still ambivalent about whether or not to curate them) into a project/photo book/exhibition and then submit it to a bunch of the fancy photography shindigs.

Idea #2 "Family" Again, single image of what best represents family to them. Had all the portrait photographers on here in mind for this but not limited to them. Same as #1, free interpretation, collect, curate, and publish in some shape form or fashion.

We can vary the prompts to cater to different types of photography but I think you get where I'm coming from/what I'm trying to accomplish. Thoughts/concerns/ideas?

The home one would be great. As I live on a boat and I know someone who lives in a van. Also different parts of the world, types of houses, self builds, wilderness. This has some legs for sure!

So this is completely off topic and random but I have a question for you. I managed to get one of my photos in the inaugural edition of the Dark Peak Photo Festival in Glossop (had to look up where that even was). They're going to print it and display it in a shop for a week and then it has to be picked up on Feb 26th. There's no way I'm making it there to pick it up, so would you or @millycf1976 be interested in a print of this:

I have no clue how far away y'all are from there and suspect space is at a premium on a narrowboat, so it's no sweat if you don't but I thought I'd offer it to you before I went and put a price on it and tried to sell it.
