A Fair People

It's fair season! The Kentucky State Fair is in full swing over at the fairgrounds here in Louisville and I couldn't hardly resist its siren song.

For many people, the food at the fair is the main attraction but for me it's the fairgoers themselves that are the main attraction.

Too much street photography just begging to be shot for me to pass it up. Plus I had photos in the photography contest so I had to check and see if I'd won anything.

Speaking shooting things, it wouldn't be the state fair without displays of old military hardware. The guns in the displays were far from the only firearms at the fair but only one person got shot while we were there.

As shootings go here it wasn't much, just a case of negligence so gross it'll make your jaw drop.

There's such a variety of people and things at the state fair, something for everyone to point at.

Hell, there's even in-person infomercials for if you get bored or are just feeling nostalgic for the good old days of insomnia television.

It appeared they'd implemented a novel solution to the age old problem of long lines for rides. Guess it's hard for there to be much of a line at the rides if everyone in line waiting to get tickets for them.

Once you got tickets though, you were good. Well, assuming you actually enjoyed the rides. The poor lady on the Ferris wheel with the kids seemed to be doing her best to disassociate.

Some of the adults appeared to have forgotten how to have fun at the fair.

Not everyone had though...

It was a fairly good crowd, they even had to close the main gate for an hour because parking was getting scarce. Going to give it another visit on Friday, so consider this fair warning, there's going to be more photos.

I remember fairs being fun, especially when I was trying to spend my parents' money on the attractions instead of my own. I'd meander to the North Idaho State Fair, except Idaho has gotten overcrowded, and everything is on fire in the Washington/Idaho border region so there is smoke everywhere. Although fair week might be a good time to see Silverwood Theme Park, too, with the crowds hopefully being drawn elsewhere. Hmmm. We'll see what the AQI is tomorrow.

I never went to anything other than the county fair until I moved to Louisville and that was a much more rinky-dink affair. Wasn't the ticket racket, you just paid to get in and could ride all you wanted, which I think is the only reason we got to do much at it.

We're under an excessive heat warning for pretty much the rest of the week, so I think I managed to catch it at just the right time. Don't know how much I'd count on the crowds being elsewhere, people seem to be coming out in droves for just about everything these days.

First I want to commend you on your impressive black and white photographs taken at the Kentucky State Fair. The groovy effect you captured in the third image (below) caught my eye, especiallywhen I zoomed in on my smartphone. Excellent work!

Unbelievable how "unsmart" and careless some people are with regard to owning and mishandling guns. Thankfully the outcome of the accidentally discharged gun wasn't worse at an event as crowded as the state fair. Scares me to think how bad things could get this week with the heat combined with rookies drinking too much and underaged/uneducated gunowners mixed together. Be careful.

Did you place in the photo contest or is the judging process not yet complete? Good luck! @coloneljethro

Thank you! That third one is definitely my favorite of the bunch, that display case was set up perfectly for all kinds of fun effects.

Oh lord, you ain't kidding. I've seen plenty of unsafe behaviors with firearms over the years but it seemed like when all the guns came out in 2020 it just got so much worse. There's so many teenagers with guns these days, just makes this sort of thing all the more likely. This was a 19 year old who'd stuck a loaded pistol in his waistband, it started to fall out and fired and hit is girlfriend's foot when he tried to stop it. Yeah, with the heat and the drinking and all I'm afraid it could get much worse. I'll try my best!

They've still not posted results for the digital only competitions but I got an honorable mention ribbon for my B&W scenic entry. Still haven't decided whether I should be proud or salty about that.

Thanks!

Next time something like that goes down, give me a little heads up, you're only a couple hours away.

When the pictures are converted to black and white, their beauty is greatly enhanced as we can see that the event is looking very good and the people are enjoying it a lot. together with another.

Love these photos! I am a huge fan of street photography, as well as monochrome… and fairs! Do you have trouble with people giving you the evil eye when you take their picture without their permission? If I didn’t have that fear I would do a lot more of this type of photography.

Thank you! I got my start doing street photography amidst the Breonna Taylor protests here in Louisville in 2020, so the evil eye was the least of my concerns at the time. After that it was hard to get too concerned by it. With sensitive/vulnerable groups, folks that might fear for their safety I try to ask first, but otherwise the evil eye is just comes with the territory.

I've posted this photo before but I'm pretty sure it will always be my favorite evil eye photo. I suspect that the evil eye is often what helps make a photo 'pop' for lack of a better word.

There's a documentary, Everybody Street by Cheryl Dunn, that got me interested in street photography. It's about NYC street photographers and some of them get into dealing with the evil eye, I feel like it helped prepare me for dealing with it. I recommend it to anybody interested in street photography, even if it doesn't help with the fear it is lovely inspiration.
