My Favorite Cilembu Sweet Potato (Yam)

IMG_20250127_165033.jpg

Hello. Asean mates... How is the weather where you are lately? In my place, there are many unpleasant news related to the damage of the weather that is not fine. Lots of landslides and floods. Hopefully all the disasters will soon pass and may we all always get protection from God.

But in this post, it is still related to my adventure in Semarang. While heading to the Avalokitesvara pagoda, I saw a line of Cilembu yam sellers, which is my favourite. My friend and I headed towards the pagoda on a motorbike, immediately pulling over to the sweet potato vendor.

Like Cilembu yam sellers everywhere in my country, they are very distinctive and the same. The sweet potatoes they sell are both raw and roasted. Of course, the price between the two variants is different.

And yes, you heard it right. While the standard practice is to steam or boil the sweet potato for consumption, the Cilembu sweet potato must be roasted. Because the roasting process is what makes the texture of the sweet potato soft, moist and gives off a honey-like sweetness. Therefore, apart from being called Cilembu yam, this yam also has the nickname as honey yam as its flavour.

The appearance of the skin is pale yellow and the shape is of course elongated. Unlike purple sweet potatoes or ordinary local sweet potatoes. However, for the inside, this yam has a tantalising bright yellow colour. There is a pleasant sensation and a very distinctive aroma every time I open the skin of this Cilembu yam.

It is said that this yam originally came from a village called Cilembu in West Java, but as public interest grew and there were so many enthusiasts for this yam, there were many yam farmers from other regions as well.

By the way, is there a yam in your country that has similar criteria? To conclude, although the price for this Cilembu yam is more expensive than other yams, it is well worth the quality. I guess... next post, we'll talk about other local foods?

Oh, a roasted sweet potato, only see it in some kdrama series but haven't really tried it. We usually just steamed them the, we do fried them too making a sweet potato fries - this one's my favorite. It was fried with sugar and littke bit of salt. And I think we have this kind of sweet potato in the Philippines aside from the purple one.

That's right! Often in Korean drama scenes, sweet potatoes are eaten while the hot smoke is still rising... looks delicious. Do you think I prefer purple or other?

Right, right, it's always that kind of scenario, hsha. Well, it's really best to consume while its still hot right. Hehe. Purple is good too though, what do you prefer?

Wow, I really love sweet potatoes! We have so many in our backyard, but it's not their season yet. They're so good boiled and we usually eat them for breakfast, they're delicious with coffee. I've also tried making them into potato fries, they're delicious, especially with cheese powder.

Wow. I like sweet potatoes, too. Here in Cebu City, Philippines, they cost between PHP 50- PHP 60 per kilo. But in our province, we just harvest them from my auntie's farm. I really enjoy eating sweet potatoes; they're delicious and healthy, too.
