Philippine Stock Market Analysis (As of March 16, 2025) -- Ex-President Duterte Arrested and Charged in ICC

Philippine Market (PSE Index) -- Buy on Dip

Despite the recent political drama (ex-President arrested and brought to ICC), the index dropped once for that day but is currently trying to break resistance. I hope I get to have a window to buy more via Equity fund as levels roam near 6200 levels.

Political Risks in the Philippines

As the Philippine market was trying to rebound from recent lows, last March 11, former President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested and flown into the Hague, Netherlands. There will be a trial for him by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Coincidentally, there was a drop in the index by 2.42%; however, succeeding days shows that it's merely a healthy correction.

Duterte has been a divisive figure ever since he became Philippine President. He was first admired as a mayor from Southern Philippines (Davao, Mindanao island), known for being strong-willed thus establishing a safe and organized city. His tough-talking approach quite often leads him to controversial situations.

He led the country with a strongman approach. He waged war against drugs and is now being tried for Extrajudicial Killings (EJK). He is Machiavellian and didn't care for Human Rights, the deaths for him was more of just collateral damage. His beef with former Human Rights Commissioner and Senator Leila De Lima ended the latter in jail being accused as a drug peddler. She got acquitted after 7 years in jail.

He was not good with criticisms and treated his Opposition as enemies with a personal vendetta. Shutdown media (ABS-CBN/Rappler) and a big proliferator of fake news through the use of social media bloggers and State-controlled media.

He still has a huge following given that he is a populist. The nation is divided once again. Ironically, the current political instability is caused by the rift between the current President (Bongbong Marcos) and Vice President (Sara Duterte). They were allies in the 2022 National Elections and the theme of their campaign was Unity.

@scion02b one thing for sure that the former president Duterte had done the best is that he save the young generation. He gave us safety, that we didn't have today. He is concern for the future because he believed that when he is old, the young generation will be his doctor, will be his nurse, his provider. The extra judicial killings may a negative impact especially to those who are killed and their families but it saves thousands of lives from being killed, raped and kidnapped. During Duterte's regime we are safe and during Marcos reign we always have a nerve that one day we may killed by a drug addict because he emphasizes drugs as useful matter. What a shame!

I don't have a problem with his style being tough on CONVICTED criminals. I'm also against drugs.

But why is he company with shady people like Michael Yang, a Chinese businessman who got linked into drugs, even made him as economic adviser. Under his term, was there any bigtime druglords who were captured?

Duterte also favors China more than the West. Where do you think drugs come from, or who are the main operators?

Impunity - this is one of the problems under his administration.

Definition:
Impunity refers to exemption from punishment, harm, or consequences despite committing wrongdoing. It means that a person or group can act without fear of being held accountable.

Do you want to be in a system where there are people who think they are untouchable? Who should decide who are exempt or not?

Under your question, was there any big time druglords who were captured? Yes there is. Here in Mindanao particularly in Ozamiz. You could search it anyway. The Parohinog family which is the main source of drugs almost all over Mindanao. No one touched them before but Duterte was so fierced that he challenge them to surrender in a span of weeks I think I'm not sure but the family didn't so he arrested them. And that arrest signifies how serious he is in his job clearing Philippines from drugs.
In your question why would he befriend people you named? Our Duterte is very smart. He always be friend enemies/hideous people to reveal secrets. Being a friend in China resulted to lesser tensions in the West Philippine Sea. We can't go war with China, we don't have enough weapons and people. That's how Duterte fix problems, peace talks and mind you he has this patience that we saw how he bravely face nations, how he face so many problems that no one president can ever make. If Duterte were not be the president during Marawi seige, I don't know if Philippines is still Philippines today. If he has shortcomings, he has lots of good things contributed to the country and to the future of Filipinos that today our beautiful future ended by Marcos. Because Marcoses supported the use of drugs. What the he**?

If Duterte is so smart and he did no wrong, then he shouldn't worry. Let Justice prevail, no matter how slow.

Regarding Marcos, this goes back to my post at the end wherein I mentioned that it's ironic that there is Duterte vs. Marcos when both were campaigning for UNITY. If Duterte knew Marcos was a user/drug coddler, why no action? This only shows partisan politics. Friends of Duterte will be safe as long as he is in power. Now that they are enemies, they fight for what is right?

Re China: I don't see a win-win situation with them. Why do you think Taiwan doesn't want to be associated with Mainland China? Duterte hates CPP. Where do you think the Communist Party of the Philippines originated?

If you're from the South, you might not be aware about the impact of POGOs to our nation. It's really bad. Alice Guo and the rest, there is a huge syndicate out there and who is protecting them?

Where is the consistency? Duterte is full of irony. Too many to mention.

Just to summarize, my personal assessment of Duterte is:

Mayor - Great!
President - Fail.
