Death Marches in Sandakan : Not forgotten
Kundasang War Memorial
While I traveled to Kundasang, I made sure I would head to the war memorial. The last time I came here was a couple of years ago. I just love heading to places that have lots of colorful history. A lot of Australian soldiers sacrificed their lives during World War II. This is going to be a long post with lots of photos. I wanted to preserve this for the future. Some of the newspaper clippings seem to have deteriorated bits. However, that being said, this place is still maintained well with the garden being trimmed and well taken care of.
Sandakan Prisoners of War Camp
More than 1000 Australian soldiers were forced to march for hundreds of Kilometres.
Kundasang, Sabah is one of my favorite destinations. It is calm and the weather is cool.
The scenic view of the mountain ranges
I was here eating at KFC with my mom-in-law. After that, they decided to head to the nearby market. I went exploring on my own. I flew my drone around here. Will share that in a future post. Then, I went to explore the war memorial.
To get to this memorial, you have to go to Kundasang town. Then, it is located somewhere in the corner. Then you just pay for the tickets. It is quite affordable. I spend half an hour here.

The entrance to the war memorial complex
From here, you'll have to walk up. There are some beautiful gardens along the way. Then, when you're at the highest part of this place, you'll see a lot of names on the walls on stone plates.
A vlog that I made
I recorded around 200 plus gigabytes of footage that I edited and uploaded to YouTube while I was in Sabah. Check out the video.
The steps that head up.
It was about to rain as the skies were starting to turn dark. I had to hurry. Or else, I could be soaking in the rain.
The steel roof with the flag of the state of Sabah.
Some other families were here visiting the memorial as well.
Clippings form newspapers. The last time I was here, I remembered these clippings to be in better shape.
So since I was here, I decided to snap some photos just in case they deteriorated in the future. I took pictures of most of them.
The news clippings
The number of prisoners of War during WWII. Tragic but not forgotten. It's hard to imagine what they all endured during this march along some of the toughest terrains.
These clippings are located at a memorial lobby area before you head upwards.
The flags of the UK and Australia hung high up here.
Time to work out my leg muscles. On the left is a beautiful garden.
Lots of time was spent to maintain this beautiful garden. I am impressed.
Enjoying my view of the green.
A memorial plaque with some description.
Kinabalu War Memorial Kundasang and Australia
World War II ended in 1942 and it has been more than 80 years.
The good thing about smartphone cameras and the amount of detail that these little sensors are able to capture is amazing.
After visiting this garden, I walked up these steps.
Australia and UK flags
The English garden
This garden is well maintained. I imagined what it must have been when the Australian soldiers were here on the island of Borneo.
British soldiers who lost their lives here. Protecting the land.
The English garden
I saw these unique flowers hanging. Google searched and the results came out as Angel's trumpet.
The Borneo garden. Borneo lies on the equator and is home to vast amounts of flora and fauna.
Orchid plants and ferns. They grow around everywhere.
Some orchids
After walking around and visiting the different gardens breathing in the fresh air, I walked up to the main memorial section of this memorial.
This is the view
Those houses are built on mountain slopes. Wonder how they did them. Not easy to build these houses and have them on slopes.
The names of the soldiers are inscribed into the stone plates on this level.
Some of the soldiers have very sad fate. Some disappeared, jumped into rivers, and went missing. Died after amputation.
Brave soldiers who came to this land not being able to get back to their homeland. I was enjoying myself when I noticed the skies turning really dark and the rain was about to fall. So I had to rush back.
Climbed down back along these steps.
Hope that you enjoy this tour of the Kundasang War Memorial. If I came here again in the future, I would definitely visit this place again. Thank you for reading this post. Have a great day.
