Chinese New Year Vibes
Chinese New Year vibes here in Miri, Sarawak. Today is Chap Goh Mei and it is the last day of Chinese New Year here in Miri. Till next year. Today, I am going to share a post about how I spent this CNY here.
This first picture is the decor in my living room. My family doesn't spend a lot of time decorating the house.
My wife and Avery. She is five this year.
The orange is molded into the shape of a traditional gold bar. This is not easy to grow. I saw this at a nearby grocery shop. Quite expensive. But I did not buy it.
This year is the year of the snake.
My sister from another district of Sarawak usually sends home made layered cake to my house. So these are the rare Sarawakian famous cakes.
These cake usually take a lot of time to make as well as skill to make.
We also had a family reunion dinner to celebrate the Chinese New Year together. We went to a Muslim Chinese Restaurant.
Introducing the Aroma Seafood restaurant here in Miri.
This is a restaurant that serves delicious Chinese cuisine but the food here is halal.
We reserved the table in advance as the Chinese New Year season is usually packed with lots of people hungry and eating here.
The theme is green. The restaurant is quite clean. So what is the food like? Is it any good? This restaurant is quite new and was in operation a couple of months ago.
The table size here is big. Lots of space for families.
This is my dad. I guess the green background is great for taking photos.
The first dish is the clay pot mushroom and fried tofu. This dish is amazing. A mix of tofu and mushroom.
What I usually love to do is get a plate of rice and pour a bit of the soup from this dish into my rice. This adds extra flavor to the dish.
The next dish is a special dish. A type of fern that is native to Sarawak known as the Miling. This type of plant grows near the forest and near water paths.
Salted Egg fried squid
One of my favorite dishes. The strong flavours of the dish are amazing.
The next dish is a plate of brinjal. This dish is not what I usually like but my mom loves it.
Brinjal is usually quite soft. Not really an eggplant person.
Seaweed soup
This soup is thickened with starch. Then, it is poured into individual smaller bowls. Then shared. I usually add some vinegar to add a bit of umami.
Then after dinner. Usually one of the things to look forward to is the fireworks. Every year during Chinese New Year, everyone gathers outside their house lights up fireworks ,and sends them up into the sky. I have attached a video of the fireworks display in case you're interested to see what it looks like here.
I love recording videos for memory.
Thank you very much for spending time reading this post. Really appreciate it for the comments received from my last post a bout the flooding in Miri.
Have a wonderful day ahead.
