1910 - The year Malaysia discovered oil

The uncovering of a rare sight here in Miri. In 1910, Shell discovered the first oil well in Malaysia, located in Miri, Sarawak.

Recently, there is a roundabout here in the city which has lots of trees covering most of the area cleared. After the area was cleared, it revealed something historical at this particular site. This could have been one of those earlier oil wells in Miri in 1910. It still looks quite pristine.

A possible pump

This could have been an oil pump. It looks like it is that. Maybe used in 1910 to pump out oil from the ground.

There are two oil tanks beside it. These could have been used to store oil. I am using some of my own theory.

Sadly, this place is going to be demolished in the coming months. This is due to the increasing congestion around this area, especially during peak hours. So, the local city council has decided to clear out the plants and is planning on some reconstruction to build new roundabouts, replacing this one.

So, I am uploading them here for future reference. This roundabout will no longer be here in the future.

1910 - The colours of the logo still look quite new with some algae growing. For so long, no one noticed this area until the trees were cleared.

The close-up of the tank - possible oil tank. This has been sitting here for such a long time.

Thomassen - This could have been the brand for the pump. I think this could have been part of a nodding donkey.

Imagine if this was the original location where they found oil, now Malaysia is one of the largest oil producers in the world.

From underneath this tower, there seem to be some ladders a long way up.
