On Budget Artist Repurpose Things To Make Canvas Panel
Hello, How are you? As an artist with many mediums to try, buying art materials is kind of expensive. I love to repurpose materials that are just sitting around my room waiting to be used. Recycling makes me happy, and I always think I help a little by recycling my heart flutter at the result, like, "How did that happen?" LOL So, I saw the ASEAN Hive Challenge: Creative Repurposing. Oh, maybe my entry this can help on budget artists like me just a little hihi. What I am going to do is a canvas panel. I am going to repurpose the box of the graphic tablet I bought that will serve as the hard back of the canvas and make those as a canvas panel by using a canvas clothes on it. I will show you how easy it is to make one. :D
Materials I Used:
- Box/Thick Paper Folder
- Glue
- Ruler
- Bone Folder
- Mixing Tool
- Scissors
- Cutter
- Plastic Scraper
- Heavy Object
- Cutting Mat
- Water
- Talcum Powder
- White Acrylic Paint
- Plastic Container
- Canvas Clothes
- Sandpaper
- Thick Paper
Let's Repurpose!
Making the Hard Backing:
This is the box I am going to repurpose. I am going to remove all the covers of the box, and this process is messy but worth it. Now I have two thick hard paper.
I poured enough glue onto the hard paper and, using the plastic scraper, I evened out the glue.
I put the paper folder on top of the hard paper, then I use a bone folder to flatten any bubbles on the surface of the paper. I cut any excess paper with a cutter to make it even.
I place the paper on the floor and put a heavy thing on top of it. I let it dry for a moment.
Now the paper is dried, and I have a handmade chipboard. Next, I am going to cut it to the size I want using a cutter and a metal ruler.
I decided to cut it 4x4". Now I have chipboard! YEHET!
Making Gesso:
In a container, I pour 30 ml of talc powder, next I pour 30 ml of glue in.
Mix them until well combined. And I added little by little of water.
Next, I added just two scoops of white acrylic paint and mixed them again.
The texture should look like this.
Making Canvas Panel:
I placed the chipboard I made onto the cutting mat, and then I applied glue evenly onto the chipboard. Then, facing the glue part, I pressed it onto the canvas fabric.
Then, I used the bone folder to press the fabric to the chipboard.
After I glue the front, I am going to glue the back part, too.
Using the scissors, I cut the excess part of the fabric before I glued that part.
Then I poured the gesso I made onto the canvas chipboard. I just eyeball it literally LOL. Then, I used the plastic scraper to even out the gesso. Let it dry for a moment.
For this part, I am going to glue thick paper onto the back of the canvas panel to make it look professionally made. LOL
For the final step, sand the canvas panel.
After I made the chipboard, I tried to paint our adopted puppy using gouache. I love the result.

Yes, recycling is a way to help our environment in our own little ways. I have my own ways too but normally just repurposing old clothes into rags heheh... I used to have these materials in Art Class at school when I was in high school. You're so talented with that painting. Looks like a nice present for someone. This is recycling in an artsy way.
