Dopamine Vs Discipline: What Keeps You Going?// Dopamina Frente a Disciplina: ¿Qué te Mantiene en Marcha? [ENG/ESP]
I gained a full understanding of dopamine during our clinical biochemistry class last year. I found the topic very interesting, so I did some personal research and even wrote a short article about it.
Dopamine is part of our reward system, motivating us to work, study, or do anything that's important. Whenever we anticipate a reward, dopamine is released in the brain, giving us the motivation and focus to complete the task. This often leads us to repeat the action to experience the reward again. The reward can take the form of pleasure, happiness, peace, or any feeling of satisfaction. My lecturer called it the 'feel-good hormone,' and there's a risk we can become addicted to whatever makes us feel good, whether it's positive or negative.
It's the reason we can spend hours on TikTok and avoid to study or work. You know you have things to do, but you just can't stop scrolling. I discovered the only way to overcome TikTok addiction is to start following content that I find unappealing and boring. It really worked for me because I haven't opened TikTok in weeks, even though the app is still on my phone.
Now, the problem is that, like my younger brother, most of us rely on motivation to focus on tasks. This means we need a good amount of dopamine to stay focused for a long time. The simple trick is to plan a reward for yourself; your favorite ice cream, a delicious meal, etc. Anything that brings you pleasure or makes you feel good will boost your dopamine levels and help you get things done. I use this method a lot while studying, and it works. I just have to keep my promise, and my brain stays committed to the plan:)
For entrepreneurs, content creators, or anyone building a career, understanding how dopamine works is more than a fun science fact, it’s a productivity tool. Many of us get stuck in short dopamine cycles: refreshing notifications, constantly checking wallets, or waiting for audience/client feedback.
This is to say that we need more than just dopamine to persevere in our projects.
As entrepreneurs, we require consistency. And consistency comes from habit and data, not dopamine.
What am I trying to say? We have to be consistent to achieve our dreams. Consistency requires discipline, and the results are far more satisfying than those from dopamine. So, while dopamine is for short-term achievements, consistency is for the long term. And consistency means showing up every day, even when the reward isn't immediately satisfying. Consistency means tracking our progress and finding satisfaction and motivation in the small growth we see.

lol addicted to tiktok then delete it 🤣
Consistency is key to so many things both professionally and personally!
Lol
I have a friend who's addicted to tiktok. She can't delete it because she doesn't know how that would affect her.
But she's trying to set a specific time and stick to it.
Discipline, my friend, is not easy but it's very rewarding.
Good luck with the time thing for her. I was addicted to smoking for many years. I tried twice to quit but just decided I would have only one a day... that became two then back to full addiction...
I had to go cold turkey and quit completely. She might have such a dopamine rush that she can't have self control. Good luck with it for her..
Wow!
Addiction is difficult to break, so it’s really impressive that you overcame it. I’ve seen many people struggle to quit smoking, no matter how hard they tried.
As for my friend, I’m hopeful she’ll move past her excessive TikTok scrolling once she has more responsibilities, like a job or family to focus on. For now, she believes assigning time to it will help.
Thank you for taking the time to read and interact 💝
September 8th 2021 the day the Queen died. I sang in front of her as a child and met her when I was 10 so I was shocked and just quit and that was that!
Excessive TikTok scrolling lol, it does sound like a disease doesn't it...
But yes she needs others things to take her mind off.
And thank you for interacting. This is an alt account of my @tengolotodo account and it is hard to get engagement with it :)
Queen Elizabeth? You must have really loved her.
ETS. Hahaha!😂. I didn't even see it that way.
You're growing your new account well. I'm sure it'll get better with time .
Yeah Queen Elizabeth and she was cool. And it seems that Charles and Camilla will be in my little town on Wednesday, so perhaps I might catch a glimpse of them!
ETS hehe I know people that neglect their work their lives due to ETS! They are too busy to do things, yet they are fluffing doing ETS and sharing things lol
Everything comes down to discipline. I'm sure they can overcome their "ETS" if they truly want to. It's not as difficult as smoking, drinking, or some of the other habits we know about.
About Prince Charles visit, I will advise you get your camera ready, and don't forget to wave like royalty too😊
The pleasure is mine.
Wow I just learned a new word today. (Dopamine) Thanks for sharing.
Thank you dear. I'm glad you've learned something from reading me.
You are welcome. Oh yes I did.
