Building The Entrepreneurial Mindset, one step at a time

It’s been many months since I discontinued my business. One would think I’ve given up on it, especially my friends, since my WhatsApp business group is now dead, and I’ve switched from a business account to a normal WhatsApp for convenience. But that’s not the case.

Every day, I keep thinking about business. I have this inner voice that tells me I can do it, but there’s also another that doubts my abilities. Honestly, I’m not ready to go down that path again, not yet, considering all the lessons I learned from the previous one. I feel like I’m not done learning. I need to acquire more knowledge, have a clear purpose beyond money, and become financially secure (or buoyant) so I can have a solid start.

I don’t want to believe that this feeling of inadequacy comes from fear. No doubt, I’m a little scared that I might lose my savings again, but it’s not the fear of failure that bothers me, it’s the money I’m more concerned about.

However, I’m trying to stay positive during this waiting period. And while I wait, I want to learn and improve myself. My last experience, and those of others whose stories I’ve read, taught me that it takes more than just desire to establish a successful business.

There are virtues that support a strong desire; two good examples are perseverance and resilience, the ability to bounce back after a fall, because there will always be challenges before a life-changing success.

Another vital virtue is decision-making. As a new business owner, there’s a high possibility I’d be the one making all the decisions myself. I have to read widely, think critically, and train myself to be open-minded and accountable for every outcome. This, I believe, also requires a certain level of emotional intelligence.

I’ve also learned that I need to be self-motivated, and I want to start practicing that here on Hive. I’m someone who loves to write with a clear purpose rather than just for money, so sometimes I experience unnecessary writer’s block because I want my post to be excellent, and I rarely achieve that.

But I’ve come to understand that it’s better to show up, even when you’re not sure of yourself or sure of what you’re writing.

As an entrepreneur, I don’t need motivation before showing up; I need self-discipline and consistency. Growth isn’t a straight line, it’s more like a chart drawn by consistency, where some days the bar is high, and other days it’s low, but it continues upward because of steady effort.

I also remember one of the minor challenges I faced, it was learning to be professional with my customers. Customers aren’t friends, but I turned mine into friends, and it bounced back on me. I realized, not too late, that I had to keep it professional, from marketing to managing complaints.

This brings me to the idea of getting a mentor. Good mentors are hard to come by, so I feel registering for a business management program wouldn’t be a bad idea. There are short online programs that last two to three months, and they offer many valuable tips about business. One even gets a certificate at the end.

However, I know that without a clear purpose, it’s much harder to succeed. My first business was born with the sole aim of making money. I was desperate to multiply my savings, so I moved too fast, before gathering enough momentum. And so, I crashed 😊.

Now, I realize that having a clear purpose is very important. It’s what keeps me on track. It’s what motivates me to start again after a setback. It’s what fuels my desire, even when there are no significant rewards.

So, friends, this post is about me learning to think like an entrepreneur, even before owning a business.

How about you?
Do you think like a successful entrepreneur, even before owning a business? And if you already run one, do you approach it with the mindset of someone leading the biggest venture in your country?
What lessons have shaped your mindset so far?

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

I've done a few small-scale businesses over the years, some failed, a few succeeded. One lessons I've learnt from these ventures is to focus on the value you will provide to your customers, don't focus on the revenue the said business will generate. Once you do this everything changes.

Next is to do proper research of any business you want to embark in. To know the challenges those in the business face, possible setbacks, the best location to establish the business where it's guaranteed to be patronized, what advertising method would work best for the business, etc. When in doubt ask those who are already successfully engaged in said business.

If there's something of value you are sure people would be glad to get from you, and would pay to get it, like a piece of knowledge, a skill, a service, a product, then you have a business opportunity. Focus on making them benefit maximally from that valuable thing you have, the revenue aspect will take care of itself.

I wish you success on your next business venture. Many successful entrepreneurs today, some of them billionaires, had failed business ventures before they succeeded. Don't be discouraged, learn from each experience, never repeat the same mistakes, and keep pushing.

Good evening @phyna. Cheer up, friend. As you say, resilience is key in the process. I am convinced that we all have setbacks and that sometimes we need time to recover in all aspects. The important thing is to know that the seed of entrepreneurship is germinating within you, that you have the intention and willingness, and that the time will come to bring a new project to life. Best regards.

The fact behind all this when you want to achieve something, you don't need to do it at once, is one after the other, everyone actually has it process to follow.
