Harvesting and Roasting Sunflower Seeds Gone Wrong

Ready to harvest!

Sometimes life just don’t go the way you plan it out to be and.. you just have to roll with the punches.

For the last couple of months, we have sunflower thriving in our home. They really adorn our fully concrete neighborhood. We don’t live in village that has a lot of plot to plant something so we just maximize whatever is available in our surrounding.

We weren’t even sure these sunflowers could thrive but since our home faces east and gets full sun, the sunflower is happy existing in our home. As you might have seen before, I even got some amazing shots of these sunflower.

Prior this, I love sunflower seeds. It’s one my childhood snacks that I had fond memories of. The thing is, I thought there were harvested through some weird ways but until I found out, apparently it’s really from the sunflower petals. It’s almost like the flower itself withers but actually is carrying loads of sunflower seeds which is the source of a great snacks.

We didn’t really care much about it until the other day, I tried plucking and found out, that was how sunflower seed was harvested. So, this morning I got some bowl and tried to harvest it.

I carefully plucked it out and until I get a good amount because I want to use the rest of the seeds for my balcony. I want more of these in my home not only because the extra snacks but also it would attack the butterfly and other bugs. These are great for my other photography hobby haha.

Harvest to Roasting...

soaking overnight is an option but I ain't got no time for that, so boiling that is

Anyhow, as you see, I got that much and I learned how to roast them. First, you have to boil the sunflower in salted water. Then, after around 10 minutes, dry them, and roast it about 10 minutes inside a pre-heated oven.

This is where it went wrong!

So, I was also in the middle of helping people sign up to hive. I had to explain things and I forgot to ask my mom to check the sunflower.

I went upstairs and somehow I was seated for more than 10 minutes until I smelled something burned. I realized that I was roasting sunflower. I rushed downstairs only to find my sunflower was completely roasted and burnt. It’s not edible and while I feel extremely sad, I know that we still have a few more sunflower that’s thriving and with some patience, I can have a proper sunflower seeds.

This much of sunflower seeds goes to waste 😭

The thing is, I know I can just buy them off the shelves. It isn’t even that expensive but eating from something we’ve grown and harvested, have different quality and value to it. This is what really motivates me to grow my own stuff even if we only have some micro plot and the balcony.

Eating from something you've grown yourself indeed has it's own vibe.

I didn't know sunflower seeds were from the petals.

Where did you first think it comes out? I also wondered at first and didn't know that you have to wait until it withers to produce the seeds

I didn't even know it used seeds.

Sunflower's aren't that common in my country.

I always thought you planted it with it's stalk or something...

oooooh I see. they are actually planted from its seeds and if the soil is fertile they can grow pretty long.

It's great that you can grow your own sunflowers, especially since you eat them, as you say, every harvest tastes much better than buying in the store
I'm so sorry you forgot the seeds in the oven and they got ruined
Have a beautiful day dear friend @macchiata

What a shame what happened, I'm very sorry that the seeds burned, although it happened because you were doing a good cause, helping people join #hive
Better luck next time

Sometimes, there are things that don’t go as planned. I also burned some foods that I cooked, especially when I’m cooking rice. 🥲😭🤣

It’s all part of the learning process! Still, growing your own sunflowers is such a win. Can’t wait for your next batch of seeds! 🌻🌞

I can eat them without roasting but they taste different. I love salty crunch and that's the result of boiling it in salt water and roasting it.

It is so sad that your sunflower seed burned. I know the happiness when we harvest and eat what we growing. So, don’t worry about it anymore. Don't be sad. Next time, you should be more careful.
