The Calming Power of Home Gardens

Blog Banner - charmingcherry.png

I grew up seeing my Mama taking good care of her flowers and plants. She has this mini garden, where she nourishes different kinds of flowers, from orchids to roses. That is when my interest in gardening started. Not to the point of making my own garden, but just by simply helping out my Mama in watering them and making sure their growth is not compromised by insects and wild grasses. In short, I help in keeping her plants and flowers grow healthier.

One afternoon, we were busy watering in her garden when I came up with a question. I asked my Mama, “what does it feel like having a garden”. She paused for a while and looked at me. She answered straight and genuinely said “it has a calming power”. I did not understood it at first, but she continued explaining things.

She mentioned that gardening could be your best friend. You can find comfort while watering, and even talk to the plants and flowers while cleaning. It is her outlet of stress as well. There are days when I see her working in her garden for hours, and she gets happier every time everything turned out good.

And when a flower blooms beautifully, I can see how proud she is. It was because of her patience in taking good care of them. She has a lot of vibrant flowers in her home garden, and every time their season of blooming comes, I see her looking at them with amusement. That is when I understood the idea that home gardens have a calming power.

If you take care of your garden very well, it will pay you back with beautiful results – fruits and flowers that stands out. And another thing that my Mama has always been proud of, is when guests appreciate her garden. Some says she’s good at taking care of it, and some also asks for tips and ideas from her. No wonder, she loves doing it throughout the years.

Because of what I have learned through talking to my Mama and by observing her, I can say that my interests in gardening grew bigger. It feels like I want to have my own home garden soon as well, but with particular plants only. I wanted to focus on planting vegetables, and maybe a few of my favorite flowers.

In the next few months, we will be having a new home. And we are looking forward to preparing a space for our vegetable gardening. But first, I know we need to study the season, seedlings, and how to properly take care of them. It might take some time, but I do have a vision that it will happen. And when it happens, I would be writing more gardening contents here as well.

Gardening is perfect because it relieves boredom and is good for those who are in love with it.

Thanks for sharing your realization with us. Your mama is such an inspiration! I remember when I was a kid, when my mama had her flower garden in our old house, just like you, I always found her smiling at her beautiful plants while talking with them. Now, we only focus on vegetable gardening.

It's wonderful to know that you have a vision for your own garden now, especially inspired by your mama's words and tips on how she maintained her garden. Indeed, it has a calming effect and I hope you experience it yourself soon in your own garden. Imagine sitting beside beautiful roses while sipping your favorite drink - so relaxing! Good luck with your gardening journey, hope to read updates soon. 💚

I saw a pot made with a cement mold and cloth/towels, which I often see on DIY content creators. It looks strong like it will last a very long time.
