Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025.07.20 /
When I returned from the workation, I found that two of the tomatoes on the balcony had turned red thanks to the sunny and hot days. My daughter and I enjoyed our first balcony tomatoes of the season for lunch — it was so delicious and made us both happy. The garden plants are also doing well, and I'm fully enjoying summer gardening.
So here's a little tour of my micro balcony and garden!
Micro Balcony Update
Before I left for my workation, I repotted my Hive figs (grown from seeds I saved after eating the most delicious fig of my life in Croatia during last year’s Hive Fest) as their pots were getting cramped. It seems to have paid off — all of the plants are thriving. They're little trees now ☺️
Along with the tomatoes, the strawberries have started coloring up again, marking the start of the summer varieties. I pick a few at a time for snacks or freeze them to use in smoothies. I haven’t kept an exact count since I was away for two weeks in June for a residency, but I estimate we've harvested about 40 strawberries so far.
It’s still the height of summer, but while tending and harvesting spring-summer plants, I’ve also started preparing seedlings for autumn-winter — and that brings a touch of melancholy.
As spring came to a close, lettuces were about to flower, so I harvested the whole plant to make room for summer crops and enjoyed a fresh salad with my family. Thank you for all the beautiful leaves, lettuce plants!
The “Klein” but Big Garden
After returning from my workation, I hopped on my bike to check on the garden. Since my backpack was almost empty, I brought along my beloved Sony camera. While the iPhone camera is great, there's something special about using a real camera — the photos turn out so nicely with depth and colors.
The forecast predicted rain the next days, so I skipped watering and just enjoyed observing the plants and taking photos. I harvested the first zucchini — still a bit small, but I didn’t want to miss the right timing by the next visit!
I'm really looking forward to the yellow zucchini too, but they seem to be slow growers… or perhaps something (a slug maybe?) is eating them before they grow — and I keep seeing the same tiny one each time!? Let's see!
Among the cucurbits, I spotted a tiny cucumber too! The cucumber plant didn’t do well in its original spot and had to be moved — which makes this little fruit all the more special.
I saw on Instagram that one of my favorite gardeners, Vera Greutink, often ends her garden time by making a bouquet — so I gave it a try myself. It was so nice even the bouquet was mini! I’d love to gradually plant more perennial flowers so I can make bigger bouquets like this more often.
To-Do for Next Week
There’s no major to-do this week — just a plan to visit the garden a couple of times between rain showers and think about expanding the growing space. I'm also hoping to start planning an automated watering system for the balcony.
Yes, it’s the perfect season to relax, plan and enjoy the harvest.
Wishing you all Happy Gardening! 🌿
"Klein"
Happy Gardening!
The courgette was perfect. I like them small like that. The supermarket had some that were so fresh I could hardly believe it! Lovely to see the fig trees coming along. When they fruit you must send me some seeds 😂
I also like small zucchinis rather than too big ones. I feel oversized ones are bitter sometimes. I wish the fig trees make fruits in the next years and sure I send you the seeds or deliver you one of the trees in England might be fun 😁
Exciting! 😍
Tomatoes, strawberries, lettuces, wow! They all look so good and vibrant. It must be exciting to pick them and share with your family.
Yes it is. Even it's not price competitive but the joy is priceless 😊
Nice to hear that :)
Wuau, Congratulations 😘 The tomatoes are already maturing 🍅 Wonderful job, I love 💖
