Introducing my new garden /

The last time I went to my newly rented garden to do some work, I forgot my phone and couldn’t take any photos—but not this time! So, let me introduce you to my new garden.

I live in Leipzig, in the eastern part of Germany, which is actually the birthplace of the German version of community gardens, called Kleingarten. It’s pretty common around here for people to rent small plots. A friend of mine had two plots but hasn’t had the time to take care of both, so last month, I took over one. It makes me so happy that we’ll be gardening side by side!

I started by tidying up last year’s branches, trimming overgrowth, and weeding. I also tidied up a compost area, and then now comes the planting. First up: my beloved broad beans.

Since there were no share cars available in my neighborhood, I transported about 30 seedlings on the tram. I also had a backpack full of compost on my back 😁

The broad beans can grow quite tall, so to save the effort of setting up stakes, I planted them along the fence that borders the neighbor’s plot.

The compost bin on the side (left in the photo below) was left by a previous user, and the raised structure on the right—I’m not sure if it’s a raised bed or a compost heap. Since there’s soil in it, I’m thinking of adding a bit of compost, laying down some cardboard, and trying to grow pumpkins there this year.

I also prepared a shaded spot to plant Perilla and Myoga. Both are my favorite Japanese summer herbs that grow well under shade. Once the seedlings get a little bigger, I’ll plant them.

I also enjoyed my lunch under the spring sunshine. It was such a blissful moment. I cannot believe that I can rent such a wonderful space for little money and have this kind of nice calm time a lot.

In addition to my usual Sunday micro-balcony journal, I’m hoping to share occasional updates from the garden this year as well.

Wishing you all a lovely spring weekend! I’m off to Berlin to check out the botanical garden’s plant market 👋 Juhuuu gardening season comes 🥳

So lovely! We have allotments in this country, I think there was an Allotment Act, a law where local government had to make land available for people to grow food. The rent is very low, something like 12 GBP - a pound a month. People love them and make them really beautiful, and then I love the marginal land that is all around them, often with wild flowers. My niece has one one now, near where my caravan is. I love taking a folding chair and going and sitting there in the afternoon (she is working but I am day-dreaming). I hope you enjoy your garden!

That's a nice law ☺️ It's hard to believe the rent is so affordable in England. It's almost the same I will pay for my garden. Now I cannot help thinking about buying a relaxing summer beach chair ......... Enjoy weekend too!

It is a very nice space to rent, there is a good ground to plant several species of plants and it is good that you have done it, it will be very beautiful when the plants start to grow 😍

Sorry I have taken so long to comment. I haven't been in wifi as I'm away for a bit in the wilderness! If I haven't up voted with Hive Garden it might be low on Vp and I'll make it up to you when I'm home.

Kleingarten... Little garden?? Love it. From micro to mini!

No problem at all! I tend to follow people on Hive who love to be in nature and traveling and they are away for a while 😊
