Childhood and gardening

I remember that even as a child I was taught that plants were important and therefore should be respected. I remember that on more than one occasion, if my mother saw me pulling leaves off plants just for the sake of it (out of mischief), without any purpose such as pruning or using their benefits, I would be scolded.

I also remember when she clearly explained to me that plants are alive and feel, so I should treat them with respect. This stuck with me so much that every time I go to prune a plant or take its leaves for an infusion or something similar, I ask their permission and explain my purpose.

I also remember that, since there were so many green areas in the neighborhood, we would go out to run and play, and we often ended up racing through the gardens, which earned us more than one scolding, either from my mother or from some other adult who took care of the gardens. We would get furious, and it seemed exaggerated to me, but now I understand perfectly why those ladies scolded us, because I also get very angry when I see today's children and young people running through the gardens and trampling on the plants.

As you can imagine, having received this training and observing the current global deforestation, I believe it is crucial for children to be educated about gardening, not only to respect and care for indoor or ornamental plants, but also so that they do not see trees as generators of waste in the fall, as some do. For example, I have neighbors who get very upset when trees are shedding their leaves or when their flowers fall to the ground. I, on the other hand, am grateful because my education taught me how beneficial it is to have trees around us.

On the other hand, I believe that, knowing the large amount of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, among others, that are used in many cases for planting vegetables, it is healthier to plant and harvest your own food. Not to mention that it can be a way to save money for many, since sometimes prices are exaggerated and you don't often find quality products.

Returning to my memories, the image of three huge pine trees we had in the gardens came to mind. Two were in the garden in front of my house and were quite a sight to behold. as their leaves sometimes fell inside the house, so we could see and hear the birds that perched on them or made their nests there, as well as the distinctive smell. Unfortunately, they had to be cut down, and that was when I learned to appreciate the shade that trees provide, as the sunlight coming through the living room window was so strong that we couldn't be there in the afternoons.

So I bid you farewell, leaving here my contribution to WEEK 15 - A Child's Garden

My mother was always a great lover of plants and animals. She taught me to respect nature, and it has been a pleasure for me to share my memories in this community.

Respect nature and it will respect and reward you back. We should all be teaching our children this simple message so they can pass it on
