Tana Papua, Highlighting Coffee Grown in Papua

Sweet, mild, and balanced are typically the profile of Papuan’s coffee but prior to coming to Papua, I honestly didn’t really like coffee from there. Most of the coffee I found are from Wamena, one of the most famous coffee producers in the region. It didn’t really impress me much because of its flavor. But there’s a place in Jayapura that made me discover all the coffee from the region and changed my mind.

Before actually finding this place, I only visited a place and was wondering if they really serve real coffee grown in Papua and not coffee from Lampung/ any region in Sumatra/Sulawesi. So, I was more than overjoyed when I found an actual proper Coffee shop & Roastery called Tana Papua.

Serving Coffee from various regions in Papua

Tana papua is not only a cafe but they have their own roastery that processes coffee grown exclusively in Papua. Not only do they have coffee grown in Wamena but they also have coffee grown in Dogiyai, Nabire, Paniai, Yahukimo and several other regions in the area. In this place, they are already certified and its barista even won numerous competitions. There is no doubt that the coffee here is extremely good and so well-done.

Since the place also features its own roastery, they also sell fresh beans for a very affordable price. For each bag about 250gr it costs around Rp 90.000. The owner told me that she makes the price almost similar because it’ll get confusing if each coffee from different regions would have a different price. I am sure some are more expensive than the other but with such a flat rate, it helps pay off for the more expensive green beans. Considering such prices, I’d bring some home because around Java, that would have been more expensive and their beans are rarely highlighted by local’s cafes and roasteries.

Since I’ve been to the place, I have tried Paniai and Dogiyai. Dogiyai would be my most favorite as it has this nutty flavor that I really love. While I tasted them with the v60 Japanese method, I really loved the afterfinish of the coffee.

I had a bit of a chitchat with the owner as I kept coming back to the place and they told me that the only coffee week they joined was the one in Jakarta. As for going to Yogyakarta, they’ve never been there.

Patisseries and cakes.

Not only do they serve amazing specialty Papuan coffee, they serve various cakes and patisseries that are as delicious as the one found in typical boulangerie. While I am not so much into cakes, I tried their muffin and lasagna that were so good. It definitely was a bit more pricey but the food was worth every penny spent.

In my final verdict, this is the place I love and would recommend. They have the coffee from all regions of papua, their barista knows how to actually make the coffee and it’s worth every penny spent.

My coffee journey didn’t stop here, there are many places I have checked out with different vibes and scenes. So, stay tune as I map out all the coffee scenes and cafe in Papua!

By the way, this was one of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on this year regarding to Hive awareness in Indonesian (Sept–Feb 2024–2025). You can learn how I managed it here :

It's wonderful that you've found so many special places where you can sit and relax, work, or simply enjoy a good coffee. There are a few here, but it's not the norm. What a lovely community! And I'm actually enjoying my coffee as I write this ❤️
