Sea of Stars is the first turn-based RPG that has me hooked in years - REVIEW

A game full of surprises 🌊🌟

I can officially say that Sea of Stars has me feeling quite a bit different than I usually do about turn-based RPGs. It used to be Pokémon was the only turn-based RPG I could stomach. I eventually gave Temtem a try too and liked it a lot, but it's pretty much the same as Pokémon. Other than those two, I never give turn-based games much of a chance. In fact, I don't think I've ever played another one besides those two and a Digimon game at some point.

Sea of Stars has shown me that not all turn-based games are boring though. There is so much to love about this game. The combat, story, characters, exploration, and overall design is really top-tier for a game of this type.

This is an indie-developed 8-bit RPG, but trust me when I say this game isn't a clone of something else. It will make you feel nostalgic for many reasons, but there are also a lot of new mechanics introduced that up the ante.

In today's video, I wanted to give my personal opinion about Sea of Stars. I've made it almost 10 hours into the game and have experienced quite a bit already. I'm sure there is still much more, but I think I have played it enough to give a better overview of it. My first impressions were not so hot, but trust me it has gotten so much more fun after the initial hour where I was stuck reading dialogue and having my hand held through combat.

Enjoy the video!

Thanks for watching and be sure to drop any comments you may have down below, I will get back to everyone.

I used to love RPG games in turn.
Now not so much, why tastes change
This game brings back memories of yesteryear from the old retro games.

My tastes fluctuate a lot too. Usually, I dislike these types of games, yet here I am really loving Sea of Stars.

Divinity original sin is a good turn based rpg and I heard that divinity original sin 2 is even better. Also have you tried baldur's gate 3?

I have not tried any of the games you mentioned, but have heard of all of them. The only reason I gave Sea of Stars a chance (and I'm glad that I did) is because it was included with my PS Plus Extra membership.

You can always enjoy every game you play with all your heart, even this simple one. It seems simple to me, but a game is not really simple to play. It turns out that it requires special skills.
It's a very simple review that you gave, Bro @daltono, but it contains a very strong magnet to play it after reading your review.

As simple as this game seems, there is a lot of strategizing that goes into it. When you successfully defeat a difficult boss, you actually feel smart for figuring out the sequences without having to look up a video about how to win.

I thought it was an amazing game, I finished it a few weeks ago and it's one of those gems that come out every now and then, in my opinion. While I'm a big fan of turn-based combat myself, it's true that it feels different here because you're constantly involved with skills, holding down the button, pressing it fast, everything feels more dynamic than usual.

And on a story level, ufff, personally it made my skin crawl at many moments, along with the soundtrack.

You already finished? WOW impressive! I still haven't even gotten to the point where I can fly yet. It's mainly because I've been playing NBA 2K24, Madden NFL 24, Fortnite, and other games. Hard to finish one game quickly when I am always switching between many.

I loved the soundtrack, but story wasn't anything special really.

Even though there are more experiences to come, the little experience that you have had especially as a beginner is enough to tell us that the game is a very nice one
It looks good

That Moonerang attack is seriously so much fun to do. My goal is to get 25 hits in one attack, but the most I've reached so far is 20.

u will get it fo sho..:)

moonerang.. that reminds me of this other RPG/tactical game I used to play.. they had many different weapons to choose and one that I really liked was the boomerang. It DIDNT do the most damage (not even close), but could attack diagonally and almost always hit. If I gave it to a high powered character, then it was like an instant kill! :)

While I haven't played an RPG properly in years (I had started Honkai Star Rail months ago but I only played it a few days and then forgot about it, and it has been a good while since I played Paper Mario and Final Fantasy 1), this does quite pretty for an RPG, so its easy to tell why it would catch you on quickly, though of course backed up by some good gameplay balance and story (since it might look pretty, but if you get fed up at one point of PLAYING it, then it might not mean much).

It gotta be a pretty odd yet cozy feeling to sit on the couch and play this in a PS5, though, with how powerful it is 😂

The look of this game is one of my favorite parts about it. The gameplay has to be good too or I wouldn't still be playing it. I do laugh about how my powerful PS5 is used for such simple games like this. One huge benefit of this game being so simple is that it is the perfect game to stream on my mobile phone using PS Remote Play.

Wow talking about nostalgia for retro gaming. I love it when the gaming world brings old graphics reinvented with improved gameplay. I am sure many of us can miss and enjoy a good RPG battle with some twists! Plus, the animation video made it feel like Monkey Island. No wonder you are hooked.

Good video buddy. I too have been enjoying this game a lot more than I thought I would and for similar reasons to yourself. The music is amazing and even though it is simplistic I enjoy the various things you need to do in order to get past levels, simple yet fun puzzles for the most part.

I thought I would get bored of it once the nostalgia of gaming days gone past wore off but that is not the case. They did an amazing job with this and I love it.

Thanks! The music is straight 🔥 I keep my iPhone ringer on more often now just so I might get to hear the post-rest sound effect when I receive a text.

I've still yet to beat it, but I am not tired of it yet. Damn my gaming library for being so full of great options.

i suffer the same fate. Too many options to really dig all the way through any of them. I guess that is better than having too few!

You must try The First Descendant Beta which just started today. It's so much fun. It's similar to Destiny, except it's not as grindy so far and gunplay is a great time.
