Old Issues New Fixes

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to talk about playing a really old game and how I ended up figuring out a little bit of a bug!

Old Issues New Fixes

We all need a little bit of a mental break..

I have largely not played any games for several years now. I used to be quite addicted to the things.. so it caused a lot of issues in my life. Thankfully I was able to break that addiction, but one of the important things is to be able to find a healthy way and balance to indulge a little bit every so often!

About a year ago or more, Vimukthi posted about some online game emulators that were running reaaaaaally oldschool games. Wolfenstein was the only one that I could get to work reliably, so I have been indulging in it periodically ever since!

The funny thing about it is that I've been playing it enough but getting very frustrated at the same time. I would get to a point in a level where I would save it but then unfortunately later on die so instead of losing all my stuff, I would reload the saved game.. except that the saved game was fucking broken!!

It really annoyed the shit out of me that it would frequently break, and that's one of the main reasons I stopped playing for pretty long hiatuses. I don't know why it just dawned on me the other day though.. the reason that the game got all fucked up when I saved it in seemingly random locations is that those locations were often in the secret tunnels in the game!

When I realized that the reason my saved games kept getting fucked up and it would revert me to some crazy broken map and I would have no way to get back to the original game I was playing unless I quit and started over.. was caused because this is an old game and they don't have a lot of the cleaner logic in the new games, things just clicked lol. I realized that if I indeed found a secret and went into it, but saved OUTSIDE in the hallway.. that my game was totally fine! Shit that was awesome lol.

I had that epiphany the other night and one of the things that had happened is that it gave me some extra desire to run through the game a bunch! I ended up finishing 12 levels in a few days which was awesome, considering I would finish 5 or 6 and then fuck up the game, quit for another 4 or 5 weeks and try again once my frustration was down lol.

I think it's funny that these types of things happen, but also relieved that I seem to have the patience and intelligence to think through the issue. I haven't beat the entire game yet, but I am on the final series of levels which is cool. Once I finish all of the levels I am for sure going to test my theory.. because it is currently ONLY a theory right now. I am nervous to test it and jack up my saved game the way it is right now lol

I do only play for like 20 or 30 minutes a session.. so it's not too bad to give myself some wiggle room on the gaming side!

What about you, have you played a game where you ran into some issues but eventually figured it out? Let me know in the comments!

I do love these oldschool games!

It's pretty crazy how awesome the new online emulators are. I can play all the old PC games from my youth on archive.org.

It's awesome how this stuff ends up online though!

I sure do miss playing such type of games too, I fear that I'll get addicted to it and never stop again lol, so I mostly watch others playing the game, occasionally.
I hope the theory proves to be correct. It does makes sense, late night epiphanies are always right!
