Silver on the Colorado River

Over the years I have lived in so many places... South America, the Caribbean, the American east and west coasts. I also lived a decent amount of time in the southwest of the United States, many years as a resident and more commuting from California. The desert really offers so many amazing sites and experiences that are one of a kind. While living in Tucson, Arizona, I had a girlfriend with roots in the Nevada wasteland. My description, not hers by any means. Nevada can be pretty sad looking in many of the desert areas.

However, the Colorado river is an oasis in the deserts of Nevada and California. It divides the states at their border and is the source of Lake Mead and Lake Havasu. Both great places to visit! If you want to see London Bridge don't go to England, it's in Lake Havasu, moved block by block and reassembled in this desert oasis. You can still see the writing on the blocks of stone to know where they belonged to reassemble it correctly once moved from London.

Her hometown wasn't too far from Laughlin, Nevada. When we visited we stayed at Harrah's because it's right on the river, the only real attraction to the area. That is unless you were a huge slot machine fanatic which I am not. However, I am a very big fan of Silver Striker tokens made of precious metals and payed out in Silver Striker slot machines. I bought this one in particular because it came from the casino in Laughlin, and it's pure silver.

About the token:

What I like about these tokens is that they are solid silver. Unlike the ten dollar version with the brass ring, these have about 0.65 Troy ounces of pure silver. The brass ringed versions only have about 0.6 Troy ounces. Plus I love the design elements on the token itself, they coyote howling at the moon at the saguaro cactus. A scene right out of the Mojave desert.

The girlfriend sadly did not last, we'll just say she had some issues a psychiatrist can deal with better that I can.

Harrah's Laughlin, Nevada

What's great about Harrah's in Laughlin is the Colorado river. The best time to visit is the middle of summer to rent watercraft to enjoy the cool blue water. Plus you can gamble in the evening in the casinos, after all, it's Nevada! I can say absolutely nothing negative about this place, which is saying something. I complain about the Ritz Carleton not having perfectly squared drywall. If you are passing through the area, it's a great place to stay.

Saguaro Cactus

When I first moved to Tucson, Arizona I was amazed by these cacti. They really are everywhere! The desert mountains surround you and these rugged desert dwellers are everywhere. They live for a very long time and don't even sprout arms until they are around fifty years old. But what most impressed me was when they flower in spring, these desert giants with rings of flowers. They eventually produce fruit that is dropped and the coyotes eat it. The seeds are carried in the coyote and deposited with fertilizer far away from the parent plant.

They are majestic and amazing plants to behold, a trip to Tucson, Arizona is worth the trip!

Coyote

animalia-life.club

My first exposure to coyotes was as kid watching Road Runner cartoons. In fact, they are a very successful predator that lives throughout the North American and Central American part of the world. They do howl a lot at night, which is why you often see depictions of them howling. They also will prey upon pets such as small dogs and cats, so in coyote country you keep them inside at night. Still, impressive animals that exist even in suburban areas of New York. They are true survivors!

They will do it for today, I hope you enjoyed my content. If you have any questions or comments please feel to leave them below. I deeply appreciate all of your support, and I hope you all have a great day!

Very interesting story about the cactus and how the coyote actually spread the seeds around!👍
I wonder why the other casinos reduced the silver content with the brass ring… Do you think it was strictly economics?

I think the Silver Striker corporation made that decision to save money. With corporate number crunchers it's the few pennies they save goes toward their bonus...

Animals movie around a lot of cacti seeds, It's how they have survived so well. The fruit from the saguaro is supposed to taste pretty good, but I haven't tried it. I have the prickly pear, it makes great jam!

It all comes down to saving costs!😇
Interesting about the cactus, I know there are some cactus you can fry up in a pan after de-needling them. I remember cooking cactus many years ago, actually tasted very good😊

It really does does taste good! The prickly pear cactus may have started in the southwest, but is an invasive specie the the Sahara and in Australia as well. It thrives just about anywhere it's a desert!

Very interesting to learn that!😊
I remember watching a video where they burn the needles off!☺️

I spent a month near Laughlin and loved the proximity it gave for so many different areas of the SW to explore!

It really is a cool area, I love how blue the river is there. The Rio Grande is really muddy, I prefer the Colorado river personally! The southwest has a lot to offer, I've seen most of it, except the remote areas of Nevada. Thanks for the

That's a really cool coin!

I got this cute girl's number yesterday and we were flirting until she stopped messaging back.

Today I said good morning and then she got super rude. Then called me creepy when I was being respectful. At which point I was done. Thanks but you live with the ex sweetie. I'm not going to be around a toxic idiot.

At least she proved she was crazy within the first 24 hours!

Not much there, that's for sure. The river is the only real attraction!

That experience in the southwestern US sounds amazing. I loved how you described the Colorado River as an oasis in the middle of the desert, it must be awesome!
That silver coin is great, as the Mexicans say very cool, it's a jewel, literally. Those details like the howling coyote and the saguaro cactus give it a special touch.

That's so crazy about the bridge. I know I have heard parts of that story before, but I never would have guessed. 😃

Stone by stone they packed it up and reassembled it in Lake Havasu. Havasu is kind of pretty place, if you get a chance someday it's worth the visit!!

I've heard stories about Lake Havasu. We have a lake here in Michigan called Torch Lake that is supposed to be like the Lake Havasu of the north. Lot's of crazy parties there I hear.

Havasu is definitely a party town especially over spring break. There are many celebrities that keep a home there for enjoying the lake in summer. It can get up to over 110 degrees in July, so that cool water feels great! Torch Lake? I'll have to check it out, I hadn't heard of that one, but I haven't been to Michigan in many years now.

It's up near Traverse City. I don't think I have ever been there either, but the pictures make it look pretty great.

This token you share with us is very well preserved. I also really liked it (or really it was what I liked the most hehe), the design, it's great 🤩. It's very well crafted and detailed, beyond the fact that it's made of such a high quality material 💜. It's definitely a collector's item 👌🏽

Btw, those photos have a very beautiful view ✨👀

Thank you! Laughlin has it's own beauty with the river, when it's hot in the middle of summer the cool water feels great! It is a nice token, I'm glad you enjoyed it!!

Solid silver tokens definitely have that extra appeal, especially with 0.65 Troy ounces of pure silver. The brass ringed versions just don't quite compare. And the design elements you mentioned—like the coyote howling at the moon and the saguaro cactus—paint such a vivid picture. It's like having a piece of the Mojave desert in your hand! 🌵🌕

They made this one really well, the brass ring was a way to cut down on silver content. An executive looking for higher bonuses probably! Thanks, I really like this one, I haven't been anywhere near Laughlin in so many years now!

0.65 Troy oz. of silver? seems like an odd number.
So literally an old Canadian dollar, 0.60 oz. Ag, is exchangeable for the Brass Ring version of the gaming tokens. I guess this Hurrah's token is a little more special.
The brass ring is meant to protect the silver part of the token but give it a bigger look. Personally, it adds too much bulk and I would have preferred it without the ring anyway.

Don't know why, maybe that's what the slot machines could handle? This one is a little older and it the $7 version, I like the older ones but they can be hard to find at a good price. I think they do look nicer without the brass ring, but I'm sure some executive in the company decided it would save money by cutting back on silver...

Hey my friend, the pictures, they are real postcards. What a nice trip I just took through those places unknown to me. I learned a lot about silver casino chips. It is an interesting subject. I am in the South... Greetings.🤗
