Three American Ships of World War II

These three silver rounds come from the vintage Hamilton Mint Pearl Harbor Medals collection. I picked them up years ago using my HBD, and honestly, I feel pretty lucky to own these specific pieces. Each one ties back to places I’ve lived throughout my life (so far), which makes them even more meaningful to me.

Back in the 1970s, Hamilton Mint was one of the big names in silver—right up there with Franklin Mint and Danbury Mint. Most of what they produced were .999 fine silver rounds and bar sets. Their rounds came in all kinds of sizes, from under a troy ounce to about 2.1 troy ounces, and many were commemorative issues. Their earliest pieces date to 1970, and the latest seem to be from 1978.

Even though Hamilton Mint was creating unique silver art bars and rounds for nearly a decade, there still isn’t a ton of information out there about them.

U.S.S. Honolulu CL-48

U.S.S. Honolulu CL-48 was launched in 1937 and commissioned in 1938. The ship served in the Battle of Tassafaronga, the Battle of Kula Gulf, the Battle of Kolombangara and the Battle of Peleliu. She was taken out of action by serious torpedo damage just before the Battle of Leyte Gulf. She was repaired, but not in time to rejoin the war. She was decommissioned in 1947 and was held in reserve until she was scrapped in 1959. 1

The smooth edge of each round tells you a lot: the .999 fine silver purity, the “C” for commemorative, “HM” for Hamilton Mint, and “P” for proof finish. Also on the edges of the silver round is its number, which is 0664.

U.S.S. San Francisco CA-38

USS San Francisco (CL/CA-38), a New Orleans-class cruiser, was the second ship of three of the United States Navy named after the city of San Francisco, California. Commissioned in 1934, she was one of the most decorated ships of World War II, earning 17 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation.2

U.S.S. Sacramento PG-19

Entering Pearl Harbor on 15 August 1941, U.S.S. Sacramento was assigned to the Naval Coastal Force of the 14th Naval District. At the time of the Japanese attack on 7 December 1941, Sacramento was berthed in the Navy Yard's repair berth B-6, with destroyers Mugford and Jarvis nested beside her. Sacramento's battle stations were manned by 08:00; two minutes later, her gun crews opened fire on Japanese aircraft attacking "Battleship Row" off Ford Island. Her batteries assisted in destroying one enemy plane which crossed her bow 200 yd (180 m) ahead and later helped down another which was pressing home an attack on Nevada. Her boat crews participated in rescue and salvage operations throughout the aftermath of the battle. Sacramento patrolled the Hawaiian Sea Frontier out of Pearl Harbor until 27 September 1942.3

It has identical markings as the other two silver rounds. On the edges of the silver round is its number, which is also 0664.

These rounds are part of a larger proof series Hamilton Mint released to commemorate events surrounding the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Vintage bullion is my favorite type of silver to stack. I love stacking for both the silver content and the collectability. It’s the best of both worlds.

IMG_9114.jpeg

And I’m not alone. More and more people are getting into vintage silver. The biggest reason is simple: scarcity. Production stopped decades ago. What exists now is all there will ever be—no reissues, no restocks, no second chances. That’s part of the fun.

I hope you’ve found some value in my articles. If you didn’t realize there’s a whole world of vintage silver out there, take a little time to dig into it. You might be surprised by what you discover.

Ooh, those are pretty cool. Too bad they don't have one with my dad's ship on it. That would be pretty cool.

What ship was your Dad on? You must be really proud, @bozz! I'm almost sure it was included in the set. It appears that the set 0664 was broken up and sold individually. I am lucky I have these ones.

I like how they edge mark these commemorative silver rounds, with not only the fineness of silver, but also the number in the minting, and even that it's a proof @silversaver888 !!👍😀
Having silver rounds from where you have lived is so very nice, it ties these rounds to your past!!😀

Those are a nifty piece of history. Need to start hunting for a set. I have never been to the Arizona Memorial. But always wanted to.

Yes, indeed, sis! Too bad there is no USS Yolo, which is the county Woodland is in !LOL. I lived in Sacramento for two years. That is where I met the YouTube community of silver and gold stackers in late 2015. It was a life-changing experience, for sure. I met some unforgettable individuals there. March of 2017, I moved to where I am now.
Much !LUV sis, and xoxo 🤗😘😍

Any of your fore bearers serve on any of these particular ships?

I cringe at the thought of such collections being melted down back into bullion form when these get sold to refiners.

Always, with Love 🤗🌺❤️
