My Accidental Rooster Collection, Part II

Yesterday I shared with you my accidental rooster collection. I’ve added something a bit more… shiny. Yes, I’m talking precious metals. Gold and silver, to be exact.

The first two are the same gold coins but of different years, both bold and elegant. I got these five years ago.

1907 France Gold 20 Fancs Rooster

The Gallic Rooster is an unofficial national symbol of France as a Republic. The French people also see the Rooster as a strong Christian symbol dating back to when France was known as Gaul. The reverse also denotes the 20 franc denomination and year of mintage.

The rooster on it stands tall, chest puffed out! The detail is incredible — every feather, every curve of the comb, even the stance feels intentional.

1908 France Gold 20 Francs Rooster

The French 20 Franc Rooster was produced from 1898-1915 with a total mintage of 117,448,888. The total weight of the Rooster is 0.2074 of a troy ounce and it is a 0.900 fine coin, meaning it is alloyed with a small amount of copper which adds to its durability.

Both gold coins have the same obverse.

The obverse of the coin has a profile of Cérès, the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships. She is a symbol of the 3rd French Republic and represents the copiousness of the nation and written around her are the words “République Française” or “French Republic”. The reverse pictures a Le Coq Gaulois or Gallic Rooster with the words “Liberté Egalité Fraternitén” or “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity (brotherhood).”

Last, but certainly not least, is the first-year issue of the Rwanda Lunar Ounce. I got this as soon as it was out in 2017, some eight and a half years ago.

2017 Rwanda Silver Lunar Ounce Rooster

Obverse: Features a stylized Rooster in the center of the coin. The inscriptions "Lunar Ounce", “2017”, the Chinese sign for Rooster and the purity are listed along the rim.

What I love most about these coins is that they’ve expanded my rooster collection in a way I didn’t see coming. I’ve always enjoyed roosters for their symbolism of confidence, protection, a little bit of attitude ... but seeing them represented in precious metals adds a new layer.

So now my rooster collection isn’t just quirky... it’s shiny, historic, and more meaningful.

My Gold Roosters from France cost me about 75 of todays Fiat USD’s each, but the dates of mine are probably older than yours…
