1963 Greece Silver 30 Drachma Coin

The coin I will show today is a Greek coin minted in 1963 by the Monnaie de Paris (Mint of France), to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the accession of George I in 1893 and celebrate a century of Greek monarchy.

IMG_6372.JPG

The obverse is pretty unique. It is one of the few coins that shows five generations of Greek monarchs.

George I (Greek: Γεώργιος Α΄, Βασιλεύς των Ελλήνων, Geórgios Α΄, Vasiléfs ton Ellínon; 24 December 1845 - 18 March 1913) was King of Greece from 1863 to 1913.
Constantine I (Greek: Κωνσταντῖνος Αʹ, Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἑλλήνων, Konstantínos Αʹ, Vasiléfs ton Ellínon; 2 August [O.S. 21 July] 1868 - 11 January 1923) was King of Greece from 1913 to 1917 and from 1920 to 1922.
Alexander (Greek: Ἀλέξανδρος, Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἑλλήνων, Aléxandros, Vasiléfs ton Ellínon; 1 August 1893 - 25 October 1920) reigned as King of Greece from 1917 to 1920.
George II (Greek: Γεώργιος Βʹ, Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἑλλήνων, Geórgios Βʹ, Vasiléfs ton Ellínon; 20 July 1890 - 1 April 1947) reigned as King of Greece from 1922 to 1924 and from 1935 to 1947.
Paul 1 (Greek: Παύλος; 14 December 1901 – 6 March 1964) was King of Greece from 1 April 1947 until his death on 6 March 1964.

On the reverse is the map of Greece. The inscription is in Greek, and the translation is "Kingdom of Greece." The 30 drachma denomination is found at the bottom of the reverse. Can you point to the ship on the coin?

IMG_6374.JPG

The edge of the coin has Greek letterings that mean "The people's love, my strength"... the idea that the monarchy, at least in theory, draws its power from the people's affection.

The coin is .835 silver and 34 mm in diameter.

The obverse depicting the five generations is unique. I don't recall seeing it on any other coin; they usually choose a single person to represent it. I won't lie, without your explanation, I hadn't understood anything about the back of the coin; it's quite abstract. Another history lesson in your posts.

Old coins are more interesting and carry enigmas; current ones are very simple. Although, since everything is becoming virtual, in a few decades there will probably be no more coins, and what you own will be valuable gold.

Both gold and silver are finite, @josiva. Which reminds me to step up my stacking of US Constitutional coins!

In 1963, I would say that Greece was one of the first countries to do that. As if they are saying, "Hey, we have the lineage to be rulers of this country!". I don't quite get that. But that is just me, @silvertop!

Is it not true, @thebighigg? Resources are limited, and one has to really choose wisely. I work from a budget to do DCA on metals. I have not increased it since 2023, so the change in spot prices has affected my choices.
