1906 Brazil Silver 2000 Réis

I recently featured two coins from Brasil: 1857 Brazil Silver 1000 Réis and the 1922 Brazil Silver 2000 Réis Independence Centennial. Today, I want to show you a coin minted in between those dates.

1906 Brazil Silver 2000 Réis

This coin is the first-year issue of the 2000 Réis with 90% silver. Since 1695 until 1900, 2000 Reis coins were minted with .917 fine silver or gold.

2000 Réis of this design was minted by the Casa da Moeda do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 1906 to 1912.

The Latin words ORDEM E PROGRESSO and XX GRAMMAS which translates to English as "Order and Progress" and "20 Grams" surround the 2000 Réis face value of the coin.

What's notable about this coin is that for the first time, the symbolic effigy of Brazil is wearing a Phrygian cap. What is the significance of the Phrygian cap? This is what CoPilot says:

🧠 Symbolism
Liberty & Freedom: Most famously, the Phrygian cap became a symbol of freedom during the French Revolution, often called the "red cap of liberty." It was worn by revolutionaries and became associated with the allegorical figure Liberté, much like the Statue of Liberty’s crown in the U.S.
Republicanism: It replaced royal crowns in the emblems of several nations (e.g., Argentina, Cuba, Nicaragua, Brazil) to signify liberation from monarchy and the embrace of republican ideals.
Emancipation: Though often confused with the Roman pileus—a cap worn by freed slaves—the Phrygian cap took on similar connotations of emancipation and resistance to oppression.

These are just three coins from Brazil's past.
They just don't reflect currency...
they tells us the truth about a nation's journey.

I love foreign currency I tend to collect it when I visit. I think if I get into buying vintage I will dive into deep end too quickly when I start.

Since 1695! That's a long time ago. You searched right through the pass to bring this into remembrance. You are doing a very good job. Aside from stacking silvers/coins, you are preserving history. Continue with the good work.

Your silver coins collection so impressive to look. I really love to collect silver coins. Fortunately I have received one Australia silver coin before five years ago. With transfer house to other house it was missed.

Another Brazilian relic, you have the world in the palm of your hand. I remember seeing this 2000 Reis coin before, but I haven't seen the coins that feature both coats of arms. !BEER

Do you have any more Brazilian relics?

A fine and distinct portrayal of Columbia Liberty, I know she is a tough gal but is that a 5 o'clock shadow? !LOL
I've missed our favorite Brazilian Stacker @ronavel, I'm sure he would have a comment to make about his home country's silver coinage.

Always, with !LUV 🤗🌺❤️

The engraving or shading on Liberty’s face looks like facial hair— an amusing mismatch for a traditionally feminine figure. This coin’s engraving is bold and detailed— but maybe a little too bold around the jawline! But really, I think it is an error coin. If the coin is flipped, you would notice a "9" that is etched in the face.
