When to Buy Bullion vs Collectibles

It's been a month or so since I checked spot price for silver. I've mainly been focused on gold. Imagine my surprise when I saw Silver a little over $38/ounce! I remember back when it was $16-18/ounce and thought that was expensive!

Despite the price, I'm still focused mainly on buying silver since gold has skyrocketed by comparison. It's not surprising since silver price tends to lag and follow what gold is doing. With silver proce being much higher than in previous years, there are some options for stacking.

Keep buying bullion

This strategy is the most straightforward. Whether the prices goes up, down, or does nothing, you keep buying. The idea is to dollar cost average your overall cost down.

The only issue with this is you don't know what price will do in the future. If you started later in the stacking game, your overall dollar per ounce cost will be higher. That said, at the end of the day, silver is still silver, and paper is still only paper.

Buy collectibles

The idea behind this strategy is that these pieces aren't nearly as dependent on spot price. Their value is mainly derived from rarity, collectibility, history, etc.

The downside to this is it can be hard to determine what will still be in high demand if you want to sell it. If you're purely buying for eye appeal and don't plan on selling, this isn't a bad option.

Buy bullion and collectibles

This strategy is the most flexible and likely the most appealing to a larger group if stackers. You get variety by buying collectibles. You still have to be selective unless you don't plan on selling.

You also buy bullion at the cheapest you can get it. If you're a veteran stacker, this isn't a big deal. If you're newer to stacking, you may prioritize weight over collectibles until you've reached a base weight you're comfortable with.

Picking A Strategy

Whichever strategy you choose is up to you. Personally, I favor the mixed approach simply because of variety. Regardless of what you choose, make sure you have a good exit plan if you need to sell.

I've been accumulating for over ten years buying 8-10 oz approximately every 50 days until after my mortgage got paid off and it afforded me a DCA buy every month since. There times I had to stretch it every 90 days having unexpected bills. I have more than enough bullion for my family's needs. Anyway, I'm long due for a pure bullion buy even at these prices. I just keep stacking ...for relatives.

I lost count of my silver Stack but I know exactly my gold stack is. Not including my holdings of physical precious metals ETFs. At today's prices, that value well exceeded that of my RRSP/IRA. It's a big chunk of off-the-grid-assets for my family. I wish I have grand children. 😒 If something happened to me my sons know to assume immediate possession of it and my crypto assets as well.
