How Soft Is Silver?

Silver is certainly one of the softer metals out there. Just how soft is it? Is it so soft you could pop this fractional stagecoach round out of its capsule and snap it into pieces?

No. You're not going to make any headway with your bare hands, unless you're a professional body builder. I've scrapped enough silver to know that all too well.

Realistically, you'll probably want a set of pliers or bolt cutters to make the process easier and less time-consuming if you were to do something like that with this round.

When you get into Sterling silver, it's a bit more resilient as well because of the small amount of copper in it.

A lot of the silver you see in this bag had to be systematically dismantled. Even the thin chains didn't completely cut through with the small bolt cutters I have. It was enough to crimp the links, which then broke apart when lightly twisted, but not a clean cut.

I remember getting some Sterling belt buckle parts in a random lot one time. The pieces weren't usable and needed to be melted down, but I needed to remove the inlaid stones. They weren't gems or anything, so I took to it with a hammer to break the stones into pieces. The buckle frame itself took a good one to two minute beating before I whacked the side and the stones finally cracked and gave way.

If you are looking into easily divisible silver, you're better off getting the fractional bars made in 1 gram, 5 gram and 10 gram amounts. They're considerably thinner and much more practical. Silver is a soft metal, but it's not a pushover either.

Is there a reason one would go around trying to bend silver with their bare hands though 😂😂

Under normal circumstances, most people wouldn't. The idea behind fractional silver is to be used for barter or small transactions.

I can't make a sharp battle katana with silver but it does fine as dinner table flatware.
Would you like that !PIZZA sliced?
