While writing new scripts for one of my YouTube channels, specifically Magic is Power (about Harry Potter), I started reviewing my own content to evaluate what new topics I'd like to talk about. I came across this video I uploaded exactly one year ago, when rumors had just begun about who might be considered to play Severus Snape in the new Harry Potter series HBO was preparing. I remember that back then, even at the risk of being the target of possible criticism or misinterpretations, I decided to record and upload that video, something I don't regret because I think that if you have an opinion and you'd like to share it, you should, always with respect, logic, and objectivity. So now that filming for the series has already begun and it's a fact that Paapa Essiedu will be playing the Potions Master, I'd like to analyze this video with you and share my opinion, whether you're a fan of the Harry Potter franchise or not 😉.
Mientras escribía nuevos guiones para uno de mis canales de youtube, específicamente La Magia es Poder (sobre Harry Potter) me puse a revisar mi propio contenido para evaluar precisamente de qué nuevos temas me gustaría hablar y me encontré con este video que subí hace exactamente 1 año, cuando recién habían empezado los rumores acerca de quién podría ser el actor que podrían estar considerando para interpretar a Severus Snape en la nueva serie de Harry Potter que estaba preparando HBO, y recuerdo que en ese entonces, aún a riesgo de ser blanco de posibles críticas o malinterpretaciones me decidí a grabar y subir ese video, algo de lo que no me arrepiento porque pienso que si tienes una opinión y te gustaría compartirla deberías hacerlo, eso sí, siempre desde el respeto, la lógica y la objetividad, así que hoy en día que incluso ya iniciaron las grabaciones de dicha serie y que es un hecho que Paapa Essiedu será quién interprete al profesor de pociones me gustaría analizar con ustedes este video y compartirles mi opinión, tanto si son fans de la franquicia de Harry Potter como si no 😉.
The first thing I said in the video, and I still stand by it, is that if that decision went through, the series would be doomed to fail. Why? Because it was all just a big lie. We were told that the project would be as faithful to the canon as possible, completely faithful to the book, hence the idea of making a series instead of movies, because in this format they would have more freedom to include scenes and characters that were omitted in the earlier versions. However, with Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, this completely falls apart, because the physical description of the character appears many times and with considerable emphasis throughout all the books: sallow skin (very pale) with yellow teeth, aquiline nose, straight, long, and greasy hair, and he's not handsome at all. Meanwhile, Paapa Essiedu is handsome and obviously doesn't have an aquiline nose, yellow teeth, or sallow skin. Alan Rickman, who gave us an excellent performance, despite meeting all the physical requirements, was not the correct age for the character, but at least at that time they didn't promise that the films would be faithful to the books.
Lo primero que dije entonces en el video y lo sigo sosteniendo es que si esa decisión se concretaba, la serie estaría destinada al fracaso ¿por qué? porque simplemente todo se trató de una gran mentira, nos dijeron que el proyecto estaría lo más apegado al canon posible, que sería completamente fiel al libro, y de allí la idea de hacer una serie en lugar de películas, porque en este formato tendrían más libertad para incluir escenas y personajes que se omitieron en las primeras versiones, sin embargo con Paapa Essiedu como Severus Snape esto se cae por completo, porque la descripción física del personaje aparece muchas veces y con bastante énfasis a lo largo de todos los libros: Piel cetrina (muy pálida) con dientes amarillos, nariz aguileña, pelo lacio, largo y grasoso, además de que no es nada guapo, mientras que Paapa Essiedu es guapo y obviamente no tiene nariz aguileña, ni dientes amarillos ni mucho menos piel cetrina. Alan Rickman quién nos regaló una actuación excelsa, a pesar de cumplir con todos los rasgos físicos no tenía la edad correcta del personaje, pero al menos en ese entonces no prometieron que las películas serían fieles a los libros.
And obviously, this inevitably sounds like forced inclusion to me, just like what happened with Disney's The Little Mermaid and many other projects, which I find absurd and out of place. I mean, isn't it better to create new and relevant characters to play instead of supplanting the ethnic traits of those already established? Furthermore, those who are true fans of the saga and have read the books will notice that it's already very inclusive; there are characters of all races: Asian (Cho Chang), redheads (Lily Evans, the Weasleys, and redheads are constantly excluded characters), and even the most relevant ones are Black, like Angelina Johnson, Zabini, Lee Jordan, Dean Thomas, and of course Kingsley Shacklebolt. So I don't understand why they didn't specifically assign this character to Essiedu 🤷♀. On the other hand, it is striking to note that almost all the characters are exactly as described in the books, with the exception of Severus Snape, one of the most important ones, which indicates that it is solely and exclusively to generate controversy, and they certainly succeeded, but this move could backfire on them.
Y obviamente esto me suena inevitablemente a inclusión forzada, tal como sucedió con La Sirenita de Disney y con muchos otros proyectos, lo cual me parece absurdo y fuera de lugar, digo ¿no es mejor crear personajes nuevos y relevantes para interpretar en lugar de suplantar los rasgos étnicos de los que ya están establecidos? además, los que son verdaderamente fans de la saga y han leído los libros notarán que de por si es muy inclusivo, hay personajes de todas las razas: asiáticos (Cho Chang) pelirrojos (Lily Evans, los Weasley, y vaya que los pelirrojos son personajes constantemente excluidos) e incluso los más relevantes son negros como Angelina Jhonson, Zabinni, Lee Jordan, Dean Thomas y desde luego Kingsley Shacklebolt, así que no entiendo porqué no le asignaron específicamente este personaje a Essiedu 🤷♀. Por otra parte llama poderosamente la atención notar que casi todos los personajes son perfectamente tal como se describen en los libros, a excepción de Severus Snape, uno de los más relevantes, lo cuál indica que es única y exclusivamente para generar polémica, y vaya que lo consiguieron pero podría salirles el tiro por la culata con esta jugada.
Oh! And another thing I almost forgot, but it's extremely important, is that Severus Snape is a character with a complex narrative background. He suffered bullying in his adolescence simply for being an easy target for his aggressors. However, with this change of ethnicity, the circumstances themselves and the entire context of why the attacks occurred could change, so it doesn't make any sense. It's a thorny issue that keeps coming up, and I know there are different opinions about it. Some think it's just a matter of giving the actor a chance, but I'm one of those who believes that even if his acting is very good, I can't see Severus Snape in him because he's simply not how he was described. He's not what we had in mind, not how we imagined him. It would be like seeing an Asian Weasley family when they were often described as redheads. And even if you don't think so, the truth is that it's very relevant. Anyway, I'll leave the video here in case you want to watch it and let me know what you think.
¡Ahh! y otra cosa que casi olvido pero es sumamente importante es que Severus Snape es un personaje con un contexto narrativo complejo, quien sufrió acoso escolar en su adolescencia tan solo por ser un blanco fácil para sus agresores, sin embargo con este cambio de etnia, las circunstancias en sí y todo el contexto del porqué de los ataques podría cambiar, así que no tiene ningún sentido. Es un tema que pica y se extiende y sé que hay diferentes opiniones al respecto, hay quienes piensan que solo es cuestión de darle una oportunidad al actor, pero yo soy de las que cree que aunque su actuación sea muy buena, no puedo ver a Severus Snape en él porque simplemente no es como se describió, no es lo que teníamos en mente, no es como lo imaginamos, sería como ver a una familia Weasley asiática cuando muchas veces se describieron como pelirrojos, y aunque crean que no, la verdad es que sí es algo muy relevante, pero en fin, por aquí les dejaré el video por si quieren verlo y dejarme su opinión

I love that you brought here a review of a video you made on your Youtube channel a while ago that could come true and in fact I think it does come true what you said in that video, it just needs to be a failure. But it is true that in this series as well as in many films there has been forced inclusion when it is not really necessary, because there is such a variety of characters so different that the inclusion is already done.
On the other hand changing the essence of the books and not sticking to what they originally said is a lack of honesty with the public who are fans. There will always be divided opinions, but the important thing is that there is the freedom to express yourself as you have done. I value that. Thank you very much for being present in the community.
