Splinterlands: First time seeing the frostbite ruleset

Splinterlands is a complex game, and it allows for various cards and strategies. Each fight is different as there are various rulesets applied, and this can give specific cards an advantage depending on how you use them. In this post, I talk about a new ruleset that I saw.

Featured Ruleset

The ruleset that I am going to talk about is Frostbite and the info above on rulesets can be found here. In this ruleset, all monsters gain the weary ability, and if they can't attack, they will take 2 true damage at the end of that round. It also looks like this is a temporary seasonal ruleset, but it's an interesting one to deal with.

Rule Set, Battle, and Plan

The rulesets this time are Frostbite and Back to the Basics. This means that we also lose all monster abilities in addition to what Frostbite would give normally. There is also 47 mana available, and I can use water or death splinter.

This fight is interesting because its my first time seeing this ruleset, and we also lose all monster abilities. Monsters will still get weary, so there is still a chance that they can't attack, and I have a feeling that luck will play a bigger part in this match.

Port Guardian71st
Great Bear Druid92nd
Lunaki Howler73rd
Saltwater Mage84th
Mystic Scaleweaver95th
Total Mana:46

My summoner is Marlai Singariel for its +1 magic. My tank is Port Guardian. After that are just some magic monsters that I could put in with the remaining mana.

The focus of this lineup is to deal as much damage as I can. If I can deal more damage, then I won't have to risk dying as much, and magic monsters seem like the best choice because of that back to the basics. There isn't much to say, but I am trying to shift the match in my favor before I have to rely on luck.

Round 1

round 1.png
At first glance, I think that this match could still go either way. My opponent has a similar lineup to mine. I think this match will still end up relying on luck, but I feel that the higher health monsters on my end put me at a slight advantage because of that weary.

Round 3

round 3.png
I have lost one monster, but my opponent has lost 4 monsters. At this point, I don't see any way for me to lose this match due to the monsters I have left.

After a few more rounds, I won the match as I expected.

Conclusion

It was nice to think about how to play a new ruleset. It looks like higher health monsters with good attack power are the better choices, and I like how I managed to get a good lineup. It was a bit more complicated than I would like because back to the basics also removed abilities, so magic was just the most logical choice. From what I see, I think this is a temporary ruleset during Winter, and I think it fits. It's cold out there so its easy to get frostbite. I think the twist of taking damage every turn adds a new factor the ruleset, because that means that luck will play a huge factor. At the start, it's only 10% but that increases over the course of the match. In that case, a long match would just make things rely more on luck.

You can see my entire match here.

What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.

Great first experience with Frostbite. The way it interacts with Back to the Basics makes matches intense, and your strategy paid off nicely.
