Today I woke up more like Martí than ever.
I've noticed that lately people are confusing instruction with education.

Our Apostle José Martí already told us this, and today, more than ever, I feel the need to reflect out loud on this crucial difference, because it is the future of who we want to be as a society that lies within it.
Martí said:

Instruction is not the same as education: the former refers to thought, and the latter primarily to feelings. However, there is no good education without instruction. Moral qualities increase in value when they are enhanced by intelligent qualities.

As the apostle rightly says, instruction refers to thought; it is the tool that fills my mind with data, formulas, dates, and skills. It is the how. I learn to solve an equation, to master a profession, to write correctly. It is indispensable, without a doubt.
But education... education is something very different.
It dwells primarily in the realm of feelings; it is the what for or for whom. It is the moral compass that guides me to use that knowledge with kindness, respect, and solidarity. However, I have learned that good education cannot exist without instruction.
What good is a noble heart if the mind lacks the tools to understand the world and act in it? Moral qualities, such as honesty or compassion, increase in value when they are enhanced by intelligence; they become powerful and effective.

Popular education does not mean exclusively the education of the poor; rather, it means that all classes of the nation, which is the same as the people, are well educated.

Thanks to him, I have meditated a lot on what popular education means. As Martí rightly says, it is not, as is sometimes misinterpreted, only for the poor or those with limited resources: It is for everyone.
It means that all classes of the nation, because we are all people, must be well educated.

It is a national project, not a charity project.

He who knows more, is worth more. Knowledge is having. Currency melts, but knowledge doesn't. Bonds, or paper money, are worth more, or less, or nothing: knowledge is always worth the same, and always a lot. A rich man needs his coins to live, and they can lose them, and he no longer has a way of life. An educated man lives by his knowledge, and since he carries it within him, it is not lost, and his existence is easy and secure.

And on this path, I have confirmed that absolute truth: he who knows more, is worth more. Knowledge is having a unique wealth. It is a good that I carry within me, that cannot be taken away from me, and from which I can live with security and dignity. An educated person possesses unshakeable strength.
Money can be taken from us, we can lose it, but not knowledge. With it, we can recover and increase all the money we have ever lost. But we cannot do the opposite.

An educated and cultured person will always be able to get ahead and live comfortably.

The happiest people are those who have the best educated children, in the instruction of thought and the direction of feelings. An educated people love work and know how to profit from it. A virtuous people will live happier and richer than one filled with vices, and will better defend themselves against all attacks.

This is something I have seen with my own eyes: the happiest people are those who invest in educating their children well, not only instructing their thoughts, but wisely directing their feelings. Such a people love work, dignify it, and profit from it.
A virtuous people, even if they have fewer material resources, will always be richer in harmony and better defend themselves against oppression and injustice. Because an ignorant people is deceived by superstitions and rendered servile. On the other hand, an educated and instructed people will always be strong and free.
Free of thought and creativity. Free of soul.

That's why today I feel so strongly what our apostle said: Upon coming to earth, every person has the right to an education, and then, in return, the duty to contribute to the education of others.
It is the cycle that makes us eternal, that builds, that liberates. It is the most valuable inheritance we can leave. It is the way to thank, to pay back those who came before us and nourished us with their knowledge. At the same time, it ensures a better future, freer of thought.

And I close with another of Martí's quotes: An ignorant people can be fooled with superstition, and made subservient. An educated people will always be strong and free.

He visto que últimamente se está confundiendo instrucción con educación.

Ya nos lo dijo nuestro Apóstol José Martí, y hoy, más que nunca, siento la necesidad de reflexionar en voz alta sobre esta diferencia crucial, porque en ella reside el futuro de quien queremos ser como sociedad.

Como bien dice el apóstol la instrucción se refiere al pensamiento; es la herramienta que llena mi mente de datos, fórmulas, fechas y habilidades. Es el cómo. Aprendo a resolver una ecuación, a dominar una profesión, a escribir correctamente. Es indispensable, sin duda.
Pero la educación… la educación es algo muy distinto.
Habita principalmente en el territorio de los sentimientos; es el para qué o para quién. Es la brújula moral que me guía para usar ese conocimiento con bondad, respeto y solidaridad. Sin embargo, he aprendido que no puede existir una buena educación sin instrucción.
¿De qué sirve un corazón noble si la mente carece de las herramientas para entender el mundo y actuar en él? Las cualidades morales, como la honestidad o la compasión, suben de precio cuando están realzadas por la inteligencia; se vuelven poderosas, eficaces.

Educación popular no quiere decir exclusivamente educación de la clase pobre; sino que todas las clases de la nación, que es lo mismo que el pueblo, sean bien educadas.

Gracias a él he meditado mucho sobre lo que significa la educación popular. Como bien dice Martí, no es, como a veces se malinterpreta, solo para los pobres o de bajos recursos: Es para todos.
Significa que todas las clases de la nación, porque todas somos pueblo, debemos ser bien educadas.
Es un proyecto de país, no de caridad.

El que sabe más, vale más. Saber es tener. La moneda se funde, y el saber no. Los bonos, o papel moneda, valen más, o menos, o nada: el saber siempre vale lo mismo, y siempre mucho. Un rico necesita de sus monedas para vivir, y pueden perdérsele, y ya no tiene modos de vida. Un hombre instruido vive de su ciencia, y como la lleva en sí, no se le pierde, y su existencia es fácil y segura.

Y en este camino, he confirmado esa verdad absoluta: el que sabe más, vale más. Saber es tener una riqueza única. Es un bien que llevo dentro, que no me pueden quitar y del que puedo vivir con seguridad y dignidad. Un hombre instruido posee una fortaleza inquebrantable.
El dinero nos lo pueden quitar, lo podemos perder, pero no el conocimiento. Con él podemos recuperar e incrementar todo el dinero perdido alguna vez. Pero no lo podemos hacer a la inversa.
Una persona instruida y culta, siempre podrá salir adelante y vivir con comodidad.

El pueblo más feliz es el que tenga mejor educados a sus hijos, en la instrucción del pensamiento, y en la dirección de los sentimientos. Un pueblo instruido ama el trabajo y sabe sacar provecho de él. Un pueblo virtuoso vivirá más feliz y más rico que otro lleno de vicios, y se defenderá mejor de todo ataque.

Esto es algo que he visto con mis propios ojos: el pueblo más feliz es aquel que invierte en educar bien a sus hijos, no solo instruyendo sus pensamientos, sino dirigiendo sabiamente sus sentimientos. Un pueblo así ama el trabajo, lo dignifica y saca provecho de él.
Un pueblo virtuoso, aunque tenga menos recursos materiales, será siempre más rico en armonía y se defenderá mejor de la opresión y la injusticia. Porque a un pueblo ignorante se le engaña con supersticiones y se le vuelve servil. En cambio, un pueblo instruido y educado será siempre fuerte y libre.
Libre de pensamiento y creatividad. Libre de alma.

Por eso, hoy siento con tanta fuerza lo que dijo nuestro apóstol Al venir a la tierra, todo hombre tiene derecho a que se le eduque, y después, en pago, el deber de contribuir a la educación de los demás.
Es el ciclo que nos hace eternos, que construye, que libera. Es la herencia más valiosa que podemos dejar. Es la forma de agradecer, pagar a los que nos precedieron y nutrieron con sus saberes. Al mismo tiempo, de asegurar el futuro mejor y libre de pensamiento.

Y cierro con otra frase martiana: A un pueblo ignorante puede engañársele con la superstición, y hacérsele servil. Un pueblo instruido será siempre fuerte y libre.
