Last weekend was my niece's birthday, so I wanted to give her something really special, not something I could buy at a store that wouldn't be original or unique. I wanted to give her something I made myself, with my own hands. So I started looking through my things to see if I could find some fabric that would work, and that's how I found the perfect piece to make her a sweater. Join me to see the step-by-step instructions.

El fin de semana pasado mi sobrinita estaba de cumpleaños, así que yo quise regalarle algo muy especial, no algo que yo pudiera comprar en alguna tienda y que por ende no fuese original o especial, yo quería regalarle algo hecho por mi, con mis propias manos, así que me puse a buscar en mis cosas a ver si conseguía alguna tela que pudiera servirme, de esta manera encontré una ideal para confeccionarle un suéter. After cutting the pieces (I didn't use a set pattern; I just used one of my daughter's t-shirts as a guide and reduced the measurements), the first thing I did was sew a seam with the overlock machine to form the shoulders of the sweater. I use an overlock machine because it's ideal for this type of knit fabric, as it has more stretch, but I suppose it's possible to sew it with a straight stitch machine.

Luego de cortar las piezas (No utilicé un patrón establecido, solo me dejé guiar por una camiseta de mi hija y reduje las medidas) lo primero que hice fue pasar una costura con la máquina overlock para formar los hombros del suéter. Yo uso máquina overlock porque es ideal para este tipo de tela de tejido de punto, tiene mayor elongación, pero supongo que es posible coserlo con máquinas rectas.

Next, I proceeded to sew the sleeves. I have a method for this: first, I measure the armholes, which are the space where the sleeves should be sewn. I mark where the center is and make a small cut that will serve as a guide. I do the same with the sleeves, and then I just have to put cut over cut, and in this way I make sure that the sleeve is very well centered.

Después procedí a coser las mangas, para esto yo tengo un método, en primer lugar mido las sisas, que son el espacio donde deben ir cosidas las mangas, marco donde está el centro y hago un pequeño corte que me servirá como guía, hago lo mismo con las mangas y después solo tengo que poner corte sobre corte, y de esta manera yo me aseguro de que la manga está muy bien centrada.

Next, I made a long seam to close the sleeves and sides. In this step, you must measure and position the seams very carefully at the armpits to avoid them being misaligned. (If possible and you wish, you can use a pin) and then you must make a long seam from the base of the cuff, closing the entire sleeve, the armpits, and closing the sides.

Después hice una costura larga para cerrar las mangas y los costados. En este paso se debe medir y ubicar muy bien las costuras a la altura de las axilas para evitar que queden desalineadas. (si es posible y lo deseas puedes usar un alfiler) y luego debes hacer una costura larga desde la base del puño, cerrando toda la manga, las axilas, hasta cerrar los costados.

To make the collar, I don't complicate things too much. I cut a strip of fabric 5 centimeters wide, and a couple of centimeters shorter than the circumference of the neck, then I folded the strip in half and made a seam on the side to close it, as shown in the photo.

Para elaborar el cuello yo no me complico demasiado Corto una tira de tela de 5 centímetros y medio de ancho, y de largo un par de centímetros más corta que la circunferencia del cuello, después doblé la tira por la mitad e hice una costura al costado para cerrarla, así como muestro en la foto.

To attach the collar to the base, the first thing I did was fold the strip as shown in the first photograph. This reduces the 5 centimeters to 2.50, so because the seam takes up approximately half a centimeter, the collar will be 2 centimeters high. It's important to align the seam you made to close the collar with one of the seams on the base so they are straight and the finish is neater. Then you should stretch the strip a little while sewing around it.

Para unir el cuello con la base lo primero que hice fue doblar la tira como se ve en la primera fotografía, de esta manera los 5 centímetros se reducen a 2.50 así que debido a que la costura absorbe aproximadamente medio centímetro, el cuello quedara de 2 centímetros de alto. Es importante ubicar la costura que hiciste para cerrar el cuello, con una de las costuras de la base para que queden alineadas y el acabado sea más prolijo. Después se debe ir estirando un poco la tira mientras se cose al rededor.

To sew the cuffs, I followed the same procedure but cut a strip 8 centimeters wide and a couple of centimeters shorter than the base.

Para coser los puños seguí el mismo procedimiento pero corté una tira de 8 centímetros de ancho, y de largo un par de centímetros mas corta que la base.

The sewing process is the same as in the previous step: stretch the fabric as you sew.

En cuanto a la costura es el mismo procedimiento del paso anterior, ir estirando mientras se cose.

Finally, I overlocked the entire hem with the overlock machine to prevent the fabric from fraying. And this was the final result, a beautiful little girl's sweater.

Por últimó pasé una costura con la máquina overlock por toda la circunferencia del ruedo para evitar que la tela se deshilache. Y este fue el resultado final, un bello suéter de niña.

But I wanted to give it an even more personal and flirty touch, so that it would be more in keeping with my niece's personality, so I made this cute bow with some scraps of fabric.

Pero yo quise darle un toque aún más personal y coqueto, para que fuese más con la personalidad de mi sobrinita, así que yo confeccioné con algunos retazos de tela, este lindo lazo.
